Product description

Outbound data leaving the network through a proxy is an opportunity to catch sensitive information before it exits control. FortiGuard Data Loss Prevention for the FortiProxy 2000E adds pattern-based inspection of HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP-over-proxy traffic, giving security teams the ability to act on regulated data in motion rather than discovering a breach after the fact.

Overview

FortiGuard DLP operates on traffic already being inspected by the FortiProxy 2000E, scanning outbound content for patterns matching defined sensitive data categories. Pre-built pattern libraries cover PCI DSS card and account number formats, personally identifiable information including Social Security Numbers and national identity numbers, and HIPAA-regulated health information identifiers. When a match is detected, the policy can block the transfer, generate an alert for security review, or place the session in quarantine for investigation. Because DLP inspection runs inline within the existing proxy session, it does not add a separate inspection hop. The subscription is licensed per 500-user block, with a minimum order of 1 block and a maximum of 30 blocks per annual term.

Who it suits

FortiGuard DLP on the FortiProxy 2000E is relevant to organizations subject to PCI DSS, HIPAA, or privacy regulations that require controls on sensitive data leaving the network. Legal, financial, and healthcare environments are common deployments, as are organizations handling customer PII at scale. It is also useful for organizations that want visibility into potential insider data exfiltration through the standard HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP channels the proxy already intercepts and decrypts.

Frequently asked questions

Does FortiGuard DLP on the FortiProxy 2000E inspect encrypted HTTPS traffic?
Yes, provided SSL/TLS inspection is configured on the FortiProxy 2000E. DLP operates on the decrypted traffic stream within the proxy session, so HTTPS connections that pass through SSL inspection are fully visible to the DLP engine for pattern matching. Traffic that bypasses SSL inspection is not subject to DLP content scanning.
What sensitive data patterns does FortiGuard DLP recognize out of the box?
The service ships with pre-built pattern libraries covering PCI DSS credit and debit card number formats, common PII fields such as Social Security Numbers and national identity numbers, and HIPAA-regulated health information identifiers. Custom patterns can also be defined within the FortiProxy policy interface to match organization-specific data formats.
Can DLP block a transfer without alerting the end user?
Yes. Policy options include a silent block that denies the transfer without presenting a notification page to the user, a block with a customizable notification page, alert-only mode that logs the match and allows the transfer, and quarantine for security team review. The appropriate response depends on your compliance requirements and internal workflow.
