Legacy & end-of-sale models: renewals available

No longer sold as new hardware, but your existing units stay fully supported. Keep them current with genuine FortiCare and FortiGuard renewals until the last service date, then move to the recommended current-generation model.

What the dates mean
  • EOO (End of Order): last date the hardware could be ordered new from Fortinet.
  • LSED (Last Service Extension Date): the deadline that matters - last date you can buy or renew FortiCare and FortiGuard. After this, the unit can no longer be renewed.
  • EOS (End of Support): final date Fortinet provides support or firmware.
A FortiAP is Legacy between EOO and LSED (renewable). Once it passes LSED it becomes End-of-Life.

Wi-Fi standards

Wi-Fi 7 vs 6E vs 6 vs 5, compared

Each FortiAP series maps to a Wi-Fi generation. Higher standards add bands, wider channels and denser modulation - which means more capacity per access point. Here is how they line up, with the short version of what each is best for.

StandardFortiAP seriesBandsMax channelModulationPeak rate*Best for
Wi-Fi 7K-series2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz320 MHz4096-QAM~46 GbpsHighest density and the longest-lived buy - new deployments and latency-sensitive sites
Wi-Fi 6EG-series2.4 / 5 / 6 GHz160 MHz1024-QAM~9.6 GbpsClean 6 GHz capacity now, without paying for Wi-Fi 7
Wi-Fi 6F / U-series2.4 / 5 GHz160 MHz1024-QAM~9.6 GbpsProven mainstream value for most offices and campuses
Wi-Fi 5E-series5 GHz (+2.4)80–160 MHz256-QAM~3.5 GbpsMatching or extending an existing legacy fleet

*Peak rate is the theoretical aggregate maximum across all radios; real-world client throughput is lower. MLO (Multi-Link Operation), wider 320 MHz channels and 4096-QAM are the headline Wi-Fi 7 gains over Wi-Fi 6E.

FAQ

FortiAP access points, common questions

How are FortiAP access points managed?

FortiAP access points are managed centrally from the built-in wireless controller of any FortiGate firewall, or from the FortiEdge Cloud portal. One console manages wired and wireless security together, so there is no separate controller appliance to buy.

Do FortiAP access points need a separate license?

When managed by a FortiGate there is no per-AP license for basic management. FortiEdge Cloud management is an optional subscription, and every unit can carry FortiCare support for hardware coverage and firmware. We deliver licenses worldwide, usually the same day.

What is the difference between Wi-Fi 6, 6E and Wi-Fi 7 FortiAPs?

Wi-Fi 6 (F-series) is the proven mainstream standard. Wi-Fi 6E (G-series) adds the clean 6 GHz band for less interference. Wi-Fi 7 (K-series) adds wider 320 MHz channels, 4096-QAM and Multi-Link Operation for higher throughput and lower latency. See the Wi-Fi comparison above, and pick by client density and how long you want the AP to stay current.

Can I still buy or support an older FortiAP, like the 231F, U-series or 221E?

Those models are now end-of-sale: no longer available as new hardware, but fully supported. FortiCare renewals run for years (support to 2029-2031 depending on the model), so we can keep your existing units covered and recommend the current Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 replacement when you are ready.

Indoor or outdoor - which FortiAP do I need?

Indoor models (221/231/441/443 and HD indoor families) cover offices, retail and campus. Outdoor and rugged models (234, 244K, 432 outdoor, 432FR, HD-444K) are hardened for warehouses, yards and industrial sites. We can help you match coverage to your floor plan.

My FortiAP is end-of-life - what are my options?

Until the last service date we can keep it covered with FortiCare and FortiGuard renewals while you plan an upgrade, then map the closest current-generation replacement. See our product life-cycle and EOL guide for the full lifecycle stages.

Not sure which FortiAP to deploy?

Tell us your site and client count - we will size it and quote it, usually same day.
