The FortiAP 831F is Fortinet's top-tier Wi-Fi 6 indoor access point, built for the highest density indoor deployments. Its headline radio is an 8x8 MU-MIMO 5 GHz unit that delivers up to 4,804 Mbps — the widest 5 GHz beam in the Wi-Fi 6 FortiAP portfolio — and can be split into dual 4x4+4x4 mode for two independent 5 GHz service radios in Mode 2. A second 4x4 radio covers 2.4 GHz at up to 1,147 Mbps, while a dedicated third radio scans both bands continuously for rogue APs and wireless intrusion without pulling any client radio off service.
Two Ethernet uplinks — a 5 GbE multigigabit port plus a standard 1 GbE port — accommodate the aggregate output of both client radios and the USB 3.0 port supports IoT dongles or third-party SDN controllers. Full 8x8 operation runs on dual 802.3at/bt PoE input (30 W per port); a single 802.3at port disables USB and runs at reduced capability. Up to 512 clients per radio and 8 SSIDs per serving radio make it suited for convention centres, lecture halls, airports and high-density enterprise open floors. The 831F ships with a ceiling / T-rail / wall mount kit. For full 8x8 dual-radio operation, use two 802.3at/bt PoE switch ports (one per uplink RJ45). The GPI-130 802.3at injector powers the unit at reduced capability from a single port.
The FortiAP 831F is a current-generation Wi-Fi 6 access point, actively sold and fully supported. It is not on an end-of-order or end-of-support schedule.
The 831F is the only indoor FortiAP with an 8×8 MU-MIMO 5 GHz radio, delivering up to 4,804 Mbps on that band. In Mode 2 the 5 GHz radio splits into two independent 4×4+4×4 service radios. It is built for the highest-density indoor environments — lecture halls, stadiums, large open offices — where the 4×4 models reach capacity limits.
Radio 2 (5 GHz) ships in Mode 1 as a single 8×8 radio (up to 4,804 Mbps, 512 clients). Operators can switch it to Mode 2, splitting it into two 4×4 radios for separate SSIDs or VLANs, each serving up to 512 clients. Radio 1 (2.4 GHz, 4×4) and Radio 3 (dedicated dual-band scan) are unaffected by the mode selection.
Full 8×8 dual-radio operation requires two 802.3at/bt PoE inputs (one per uplink RJ45 port, approximately 30 W combined). A single 802.3at port disables USB 3.0 and reduces transmit power but the unit still operates. Two 802.3at switch ports or a dual-input injector is the recommended setup.
