The question people actually have about this model is not what it does but how many to buy. The HD-224KR and the HD-224KL are the same access point — identical electronics, identical enclosure, identical price — differing only in which way the fixed antenna points. The R aims right of the mount axis, the L aims left. Neither can be steered: the scan range is 0° to 15°, roughly plus or minus 7.5° of trim rather than real aiming latitude. So the split between them is decided on a seating plan before anything is ordered, and it is a count, not a configuration.
Work it mount point by mount point. For each candidate position, look at which seating blocks it can see: a block off to the right takes a KR, a block off to the left takes a KL, and a position that needs to cover both takes one of each. That last case is the common one and the reason the pair exists — two units at a single structural point, one cable run and one set of rigging covering two adjacent blocks, which matters a great deal on a bowl where attachment points are scarce and expensive to add. Total your right-hand blocks and that is your KR quantity.
What you get for that planning work is reach. Two Wi-Fi 7 radios on dual 5 GHz feed a 15° by 17° beam at 17 dBi peak gain, the tightest pattern and highest gain Fortinet builds, reaching about 250 ft — a third further than the steerable HD-444KN and more than three times the wide HD-444KW. That reach is what serves seats no access point can be mounted above. The trade is per-unit capacity: 2x2 rather than 4x4, 80 MHz channels rather than 160, no 6 GHz radio, 3 Gbps peak PHY, 1,024 associated devices and 100 or more concurrently active — still a full seating block, at 33 W against the 444K pair's 51 W. Backhaul is one 10 Gbps port plus one 5 Gbps port over 802.3bt. Management is the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, licensed separately per site.

The high-density models are chosen by throw distance and beam direction, not by throughput — they all carry serious capacity.

The KR and KL are the same access point with mirrored fixed beams, normally ordered as a pair so one mount covers two adjacent blocks. The 444Kx pair is the shorter-throw, higher-capacity alternative with steerable beams.

Ultra-high-density access points are managed by the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, not by a FortiGate — the LIC-WMS-HD-SW software licence is per site and should be budgeted with the hardware. Because the KR beam is fixed, mount position is the aim: send us your seating plan and candidate mount points and we will work out the KR and KL quantities and quote the rigging with the APs.
Count them off the seating plan, mount point by mount point. A position covering a block to the right of its axis takes a KR; a block to the left takes a KL; a position that has to serve both takes one of each. Pairing is the common case, because it lets two units share one structural attachment and one cable run. Send us the plan and we will do the count with you.
Only the direction the fixed beam points — right for the KR, left for the KL. Neither can be re-aimed in software, so the hand is chosen at order time.

If you need real aiming latitude, the HD-444KN offers a 70° scan range on 5 GHz, at the cost of shorter range: about 150 ft against the KR’s 250 ft.

No. Both of its radios operate on 5 GHz, with channels up to 80 MHz and a 3 Gbps peak PHY rate. Giving up 6 GHz and 4×4 is what buys the gain and the range. If you need 6 GHz capacity, the HD-444KN and HD-444KW carry four radios across 5 and 6 GHz at up to 17.3 Gbps.
