The FortiAP HD-444KN is the mid-throw member of the ultra-high-density family. It shares the 444K platform with the HD-444KW — four independent Wi-Fi 7 radios behind an internal, software-reconfigurable antenna array, 4x4 MIMO on each, 16 concurrent streams, up to 17.3 Gbps of PHY capacity and 2,048 associated devices per unit. What changes is the antenna: where the KW floods a 110° cone from close overhead, the KN focuses a beam between 15° and 45° wide by 30° tall, steerable across a 70° scan range.
That focus is what buys distance. Peak gain reaches 11.33 dBi on 5 GHz and 13.1 dBi on 6 GHz — roughly 50 to 130 percent more antenna gain than the KW — and useful range roughly doubles to about 150 ft. Angular and beam diversity keep the link stable as the crowd moves. In practice the KN goes where the mounting position is set back from the audience: a press-level catwalk aimed across at the opposite stand, a roof truss firing down into the upper bowl, a light tower covering a section it cannot sit directly above. Because the beam is narrow, aiming matters — each unit is pointed at a defined block of seats, which is exactly what keeps its radios from hearing the other 40,000 phones in the venue.
Like the KW, the radio split is software-defined: mode 1 runs three 5 GHz radios and one 6 GHz radio for 14.4 Gbps peak, mode 2 runs two of each for 17.3 Gbps. The 6 GHz radios operate at AFC standard power with GPS and an external antenna. Backhaul is one 10 Gbps and one 5 Gbps auto-sensing port over 802.3bt at up to 51 W. The enclosure is IP67 with a pressure-equalising air vent valve, UV resistant, rated -40°C to 55°C with 1 kVa surge immunity and -4 kV lightning protection. At 18 x 14 x 3 in and 8.8 lb it is larger and heavier than the KW — the price of the bigger antenna aperture. Management is the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, licensed separately per site.

Ultra-high-density access points are managed by the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, not by a FortiGate — the LIC-WMS-HD-SW software licence is per site and should be budgeted with the hardware. Because the KN uses a narrow aimed beam, mounting hardware and aiming are specified per venue; send us your seating plan and mount positions and we will quote the rigging with the APs.
The FortiAP HD-444KN is a current-generation Wi-Fi 7 ultra-high-density access point, actively sold and fully supported. It is not on an end-of-order or end-of-support schedule.
Same four-radio 4×4 Wi-Fi 7 platform, different antenna array. The KN is narrow: a steerable 15 to 45° by 30° beam with a 70° scan range, 11.33 dBi at 5 GHz and 13.1 dBi at 6 GHz, reaching about 150 ft. The KW is wide: 110° x 110°, 360° scan, 7.15 dBi at 5 GHz, reaching about 75 ft. Use the KN where the mount is set back from the seats it serves and the KW where it sits close above them. The KN is also the larger unit at 18 x 14 in and 8.8 lb against the KW’s 12 in square and 7.9 lb.
About 150 ft of useful range, which is roughly double the HD-444KW. The extra distance comes from antenna gain rather than transmit power — both units are capped at 26 dBm, but the KN concentrates that energy into a much narrower beam. For a 250 ft throw across an open bowl, the fixed-beam HD-224KL and HD-224KR go further still.
Yes, and that is the point. Each KN is pointed at a defined block of seats, which is what stops its radios from hearing tens of thousands of other devices in the venue. The beam is steerable across a 70° scan range on 5 GHz once mounted, so there is adjustment latitude, but physical mount position and aim should be planned against the seating map before installation.
The four radios sit behind a software-defined antenna array, so the band split is a configuration choice. Mode 1 is three 5 GHz radios plus one 6 GHz radio, peaking at 14.4 Gbps. Mode 2 is two of each, peaking at 17.3 Gbps because it uses more of the combined 5 and 6 GHz spectrum. You can change modes later as the venue’s spectrum conditions and client mix change.
No. The ultra-high-density line is managed by the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, a separate software platform licensed per site as LIC-WMS-HD-SW. One controller handles up to 1,000 access points and 100,000 clients across up to 256 wireless networks, with a split control plane so APs keep serving users if the controller link drops. Budget the licence with the hardware.
