Fortinet FortiAP HD-444KW

Outdoor ultra-high-density Wi-Fi 7 access point built for stadium bowls, arenas and convention floors. Four 802.11be radios on 5 and 6 GHz, 4x4 MIMO each, 16 concurrent streams and up to 17.3 Gbps of PHY capacity serving 2,048 associated devices from one overhead mount. The W is for wide: a 110° x 110° beam with a full 360° scan range covers the seating directly below it, and at 12 x 12 x 3 in and 7.9 lb it is the smallest and lightest AP in the ultra-high-density line.

OVERVIEW

What the FortiAP HD-444KW is for

Traditional access points fail in a full stadium for a predictable reason: an omnidirectional radio hears every one of the 40,000 phones in the bowl, not just the 200 it is meant to serve. The FortiAP HD-444KW attacks that with hyper-directional antennas and radio count. Four independent Wi-Fi 7 radios sit behind an internal reconfigurable antenna array, and the array is software-defined: in mode 1 it runs three 5 GHz radios and one 6 GHz radio, in mode 2 it runs two of each. Mode 2 is the faster configuration at 17.3 Gbps peak PHY, because it puts more of the 1.74 GHz of combined 5 and 6 GHz spectrum to work.

The KW is the wide-coverage member of the 444K pair. Its beam is 110° by 110° with a 360° scan range and spatial / angular diversity, which suits an AP mounted close above the people it serves — a catwalk over the lower bowl, a concourse ceiling, a covered seating deck. Effective range is about 75 ft, so it is a short-throw, high-capacity unit rather than a long-shot one. Where you need to reach 150 ft, the HD-444KN uses the same four-radio platform behind a narrow reconfigurable beam; for a 250 ft throw across an open bowl, the fixed-beam HD-224KL and HD-224KR are the tools.

Capacity is what you are actually buying: up to 2,048 associated devices per AP and 200 or more concurrently active, which is what turns a section of seats into a working network at kickoff. Backhaul is a 10 Gbps port plus a 5 Gbps port, auto-sensing, powered over 802.3bt at up to 51 W. The enclosure is IP67 with a pressure-equalising air vent valve, UV resistant, rated -40°C to 55°C, 1 kVa surge immunity and -4 kV lightning protection with external primary protection. 6 GHz runs at AFC standard power using GPS and an external antenna. The AP is managed by the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, which is licensed separately per site — budget for it alongside the hardware.

Ultra-high-density access points are managed by the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, not by a FortiGate — the LIC-WMS-HD-SW software licence is per site and should be budgeted with the hardware. Mounting hardware for stadium rigging is specified per venue; talk to us about your structure and we will quote it with the APs.

FAQ

FortiAP HD-444KW frequently asked questions

The FortiAP HD-444KW is a current-generation Wi-Fi 7 ultra-high-density access point, actively sold and fully supported. It is not on an end-of-order or end-of-support schedule.

They are the same four-radio 4×4 Wi-Fi 7 platform with different antenna arrays. The KW is wide: a 110° x 110° beam, 360° scan range, 7.15 dBi at 5 GHz and about 75 ft of useful range — mount it close above the people it serves. The KN is narrow: a 15 to 45° by 30° steerable beam, 70° scan range, 11.33 dBi at 5 GHz and about 150 ft of range for mid-throw positions across a bowl. The KW is also smaller and lighter, 12 in square and 7.9 lb against 18 x 14 in and 8.8 lb.

The four radios sit behind a software-defined reconfigurable antenna array, so you choose the band split without changing hardware. Mode 1 is three 5 GHz radios plus one 6 GHz radio and peaks at 14.4 Gbps. Mode 2 is two 5 GHz plus two 6 GHz and peaks at 17.3 Gbps, because it uses more of the combined 1.74 GHz of 5 and 6 GHz spectrum. Pick the mode that matches your spectrum conditions and client mix, and change it later if the venue changes.

Up to 2,048 associated devices, with 200 or more concurrently active. That is the number that matters in a full venue — it is what lets a single AP cover a seating section at peak rather than collapsing under association load.

No. The ultra-high-density line is managed by the FortiAP-HD WLAN controller, a separate software platform licensed per site as LIC-WMS-HD-SW. One controller manages up to 1,000 access points and 100,000 clients across up to 256 wireless networks, and it uses a split control plane so APs keep serving users even if the controller link drops. Budget the licence with the hardware.

One 10 Gbps and one 5 Gbps auto-sensing Ethernet port, powered over 802.3bt with LLDP, drawing up to 51 W. The enclosure is IP67 with an air vent valve for pressure and humidity balancing, UV resistant, rated -40°C to 55°C, with 1 kVa surge immunity and -4 kV lightning protection when external primary protection is fitted.

FortiCare Premium in 1, 3 and 5 year terms — 24×7 TAC, advance hardware replacement and firmware updates. Unlike the campus FortiAP line, the high-density models do not have Essential, Elite or priority RMA SKUs; Premium is the support tier for this family. Licensing is delivered electronically, worldwide.
