Product description

The FortiAP-HD-444KW (FAP-HD-444KW-A) is an outdoor ultra-high-density Wi-Fi 7 access point from Fortinet’s overhead Hyper Directional series, built to blanket stadium bowls, arenas, and large venues with carrier-grade wireless. It packs four 802.11be radios at 4×4:4, sixteen concurrent MIMO streams, and software-defined reconfigurable 5/6 GHz coverage in a single compact overhead enclosure. The “Wide” variant is tuned for short-range, wide-area coverage, with a reconfigurable beam so one mount can be re-aimed in software rather than re-rigged.

What it is

This is the Wide Reconfig model. Its four radios run in two switchable modes, three 5 GHz radios plus one 6 GHz, or two 5 GHz plus two 6 GHz, letting a venue rebalance capacity between bands without touching hardware. Antennas are internal to the sealed enclosure; 6 GHz AFC standard power is supported with GPS and an external antenna.

Where it earns its place

Ultra-high-density venues defeat ordinary APs because thousands of devices share line-of-sight to many radios at once. The 444K series answers with patented multi-beam antenna shaping and four Wi-Fi 7 radios, delivering up to 2,048 associated and 200+ active devices per AP. The Wide variant’s 360° scan range and 7.15 dBi 5 GHz gain suit short-range, wide-area coverage, while software-defined reconfiguration lets the RF design adapt as a venue’s seating or usage changes. Up to 15 Gbps of RJ45 backhaul keeps a saturated section fed.

Powering it

The 444KW runs on 802.3bt PoE over its RJ45 uplink, so a bt-capable switch or the GPI-145 injector powers it without a separate DC run to the overhead mount. Factor PoE budget and cable length into the gantry design.

Management and licensing

No per-AP operating license. The unit is managed by the Fortinet WLAN controller on a FortiGate or through FortiEdge Cloud, with full radio resource management, client load balancing, and assisted roaming. FortiCare Premium support (FC-10-HD4KW- prefix) is optional and strongly recommended for overhead-mounted hardware.

Who runs it

Stadiums, arenas, convention centres, and large transit venues deploying Wi-Fi 7 ultra-high-density coverage. These are designed by RF survey; the Wide and opposite variant are chosen per section based on throw distance and coverage width.

Moving up

The FAP-HD-444KN-A (narrow) is the companion reconfigurable model, chosen alongside this one to match each part of a venue’s geometry.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Wide Reconfig” mean?

The 444KW is tuned for short-range, wide-area coverage, and its 5/6 GHz radio split is software-reconfigurable (3/1 or 2/2) so capacity can be rebalanced between bands without changing hardware.

How many devices can it handle?

Up to 2,048 associated and 200+ active devices per AP, using four Wi-Fi 7 radios and patented beam-shaping antennas for spatial reuse.

Does it need a license to operate?

No per-AP operating license. It is managed by the Fortinet WLAN controller on a FortiGate or FortiEdge Cloud. FortiCare Premium support (FC-10-HD4KW- prefix) is optional.

How is it powered and backhauled?

802.3bt PoE over its RJ45 uplink, with a 10 Gbps and a 5 Gbps RJ45 providing up to 15 Gbps backhaul. A bt switch port or the GPI-145 injector supplies power.

Is this available in Canada?

Yes. DataCenter360.ca ships the FAP-HD-444KW-A free to all Canadian provinces in 0–1 business days. Hardware sales are for Canadian customers only.
