Product description

Container-native architectures need WAF protection that fits the deployment model, not an appliance adapted to run in a pod. FWB-VMC01 is purpose-built for Docker and Kubernetes environments, delivering FortiWeb’s full application protection stack at a 25Mbps throughput tier under a perpetual license, with no hardware component to procure or rack.

Overview

FortiWeb VMC01 runs the same WAF engine as the hypervisor-based VM tiers but in a container-deployable form factor. At 25Mbps, it covers HTTP and HTTPS inspection for OWASP Top 10 attacks, bot filtering, API security against injection and abuse, and application-layer DDoS defense, all from within a container workload. This makes it a practical option for microservices pipelines, containerized staging environments, or Kubernetes clusters where a sidecar or standalone WAF container is the preferred pattern.

The license is perpetual, so the base WAF entitlement does not expire. FortiGuard subscription services for threat-signature updates are available separately if live intelligence feeds are needed.

Who it suits

FWB-VMC01 fits development teams and platform engineering groups running Kubernetes or Docker Compose-based infrastructure who want WAF coverage integrated at the container layer. At 25Mbps the throughput tier suits smaller containerized services, internal APIs, and test-to-production pipelines rather than high-volume public-facing workloads.

Organizations that need higher capacity on traditional hypervisors should consider FWB-VM08 (8 vCPU) or FWB-VM16 (16 vCPU) instead, as those tiers are designed for VMware, Hyper-V, KVM, and Xen deployments rather than container runtimes.

Frequently asked questions

Which container platforms does FWB-VMC01 support?
FWB-VMC01 is designed for container-based deployments including Docker and Kubernetes environments. It is not intended for traditional hypervisor platforms such as VMware or Hyper-V.
How does VMC01 differ from FWB-VM08?
FWB-VMC01 is a container-native variant rated at 25Mbps inspected throughput, while FWB-VM08 is a hypervisor-based license supporting up to 8 vCPU cores. They serve different deployment architectures and are not interchangeable.
Is there a throughput upgrade path from VMC01 within the container tier?
Fortinet’s higher-capacity FortiWeb VM tiers (FWB-VM08, FWB-VM16) are hypervisor-based rather than container-based. If your containerized workload outgrows 25Mbps, the typical path is to evaluate a FortiWeb hardware or hypervisor-based deployment sized to the new traffic profile.
