Product description

Cloud-based behavioral sandboxing extends the detection reach of FortiWeb VM16 beyond static signature matching. When the 16-vCPU virtual WAF encounters file uploads or HTTP responses that warrant deeper inspection, this subscription routes those objects to FortiSandbox SaaS, where they execute in an isolated environment and are analyzed for malicious behavior. No on-premises FortiSandbox appliance is required.

Overview

FortiWeb VM16 is Fortinet’s largest virtual WAF size, protecting web applications and APIs across VMware, KVM, Hyper-V, and public cloud at the 16-vCPU capacity tier. The FortiCloud Sandbox Service adds a detonation layer: when FortiWeb flags a file upload or HTTP response as suspicious, the object is forwarded to Fortinet’s FortiSandbox SaaS infrastructure for safe execution. The sandbox records all runtime activity including network callbacks, registry modifications, and process spawning, then returns a verdict. Files confirmed as malicious are blocked, and verdicts feed back into FortiGuard’s threat intelligence network. This service is especially relevant for applications that accept user-generated file uploads, where zero-day exploits are most likely to arrive as novel file types or obfuscated scripts that evade known-bad signatures. Because verdicts are also shared back into FortiGuard’s global threat network, protection improves across all FortiWeb deployments as new samples are analyzed.

Who it suits

Security teams protecting web applications that accept file uploads or serve user-generated content will benefit most from this subscription. Organizations with compliance requirements that mandate active malware inspection of incoming content, and those in sectors frequently targeted by file-based delivery of malware through web channels, including financial services portals and healthcare patient upload workflows, are the primary audience. Because FortiSandbox SaaS handles the compute-intensive analysis, there is no additional infrastructure investment beyond this subscription.

Frequently asked questions

Does this subscription require a separate FortiSandbox appliance on site?
No. The FortiCloud Sandbox Service uses Fortinet’s SaaS-based FortiSandbox infrastructure. No on-premises appliance is required, and analysis capacity is provided by the cloud service rather than local hardware.
What types of content does the service send to the sandbox?
FortiWeb VM16 forwards suspicious file uploads and HTTP response payloads identified during inspection. The sandbox executes the content in isolation and returns a malicious or benign verdict, which FortiWeb uses to block or allow the traffic.
Is this subscription restricted to a specific country or region?
No. The license is delivered electronically and applies to FortiWeb VM16 instances running anywhere in the world. There is no geographic restriction on use.
