Product description

A maintenance window or unexpected failure on the FortiMail 900F leaves inbound mail with nowhere to go. This 1-year subscription activates cloud-based email spooling tied to the 900F: inbound messages queue in Fortinet’s cloud infrastructure during an outage, senders receive normal delivery acknowledgments, and users gain access to an emergency webmail portal for sending and receiving email without waiting for the appliance to return.

Overview

The FortiMail Cloud Email Continuity Subscription (service code 309) operates as an automatic standby layer for the FortiMail 900F. When the appliance becomes unreachable, the continuity service begins accepting inbound SMTP connections in Fortinet’s cloud, queuing messages transparently so that sending servers receive normal acknowledgments and do not retry or bounce. Once the 900F is back online, queued messages deliver in order. Throughout the outage, users access an emergency webmail portal to read, compose, and reply to email. The 1-year subscription (FC-10-FE9HF-309-02-12) is delivered electronically with no geographic restriction on where the appliance or its users are located.

Who it suits

Large enterprises and service providers whose users cannot tolerate bounced messages or mail delivery gaps during scheduled maintenance, firmware upgrades, or unplanned hardware failures. Organizations in regions with less-reliable data center power or network connectivity benefit from the automatic failover layer at the mail gateway. It is also well suited to any environment that must meet email availability SLAs without deploying secondary on-premises appliances.

Frequently asked questions

Do senders know their messages are being spooled during an outage?
No. The cloud continuity service accepts inbound connections and returns standard SMTP delivery acknowledgments to sending mail servers, so senders receive no indication that the FortiMail 900F is unavailable.
Can all mailbox users access the emergency webmail portal during an outage?
Yes. Once the continuity service activates, all users whose addresses are managed by the FortiMail 900F can log in to the emergency webmail portal to send and receive email for the duration of the outage.
What happens to spooled messages when the FortiMail 900F comes back online?
The continuity service delivers queued messages to the recovered appliance in order of receipt. No messages are lost or duplicated during the handoff from cloud spooling back to normal on-premises processing.
