What’s in the box

The FG-2500E order code covers the 2 RU appliance itself: 10 x 10GE SFP+ slots plus 2 x 10GE bypass SFP+ ports (LC connector), 34 x GE RJ45 ports (32 usable plus 2 dedicated management/HA ports), one USB port, one console port, a single 480 GB SSD for local storage, and dual hot-swappable AC power supplies. Fortinet includes two 10GE SFP+ SR transceivers in the box. No FortiCare support contract and no FortiGuard security subscription ship with this SKU, both are sold separately as license SKUs or as one of the FG-2500E-BDL bundles.

Where it’s strong

NP6 handles firewall, VPN, and traffic-shaping workloads in hardware down to 2 microseconds of latency, while CP9 offloads SSL inspection (including TLS 1.3) and IPS pattern matching so the appliance can run deep inspection without the throughput collapse that hits software-only firewalls. At 20 million concurrent sessions and 500,000 new sessions per second, it comfortably handles dense server farms, colocation racks, and multi-tenant environments.

Hardware alone vs. a licensed bundle

Buying the FG-2500E hardware-only means the appliance boots and passes basic firewall traffic, but FortiGuard security services (IPS updates, antivirus, web filtering, and the rest of the AI-powered service stack) and FortiCare support stay inactive until a subscription is attached. That’s the right call if a Fortinet Enterprise Agreement already covers the licensing, or if the deployment timeline calls for staggering the hardware purchase and license activation. Buyers who want everything active on day one should instead look at the FG-2500E-BDL-950 (UTP) or FG-2500E-BDL-809 (Enterprise) bundles, which pair the same appliance with FortiCare Premium and a full FortiGuard service stack for a 1, 3, or 5-year term.

Who runs it

The 2500E shows up most often as a data center core or internal segmentation firewall for mid-size to large enterprises, and as an edge platform for managed service providers running multi-tenant environments. Its 10GE port density and hardware-accelerated IPsec throughput (95 Gbps) also make it a candidate for site-to-site VPN concentration between a data center and multiple branch or cloud sites.
