Where It's Strong

Six 100 GE QSFP28 slots handle direct spine connections without an intermediary switch; fourteen 25 GE SFP28 ports address server-rack aggregation. At full NGFW mode — firewall, IPS, and application control all enabled — the appliance sustains 34 Gbps of inspected throughput. The SSL inspection engine handles 29 Gbps of real HTTPS traffic, which matters for deployments with significant TLS 1.3 volumes. The 2 x 960 GB SSDs allow local log buffering for FortiAnalyzer-integrated architectures or FortiGate Cloud logging before offload. Hardware-accelerated VXLAN segmentation and ZTNA enforcement are built into FortiOS and do not require additional hardware. Organizations with CGNAT or hyperscale session requirements can unlock further NP7 acceleration through the optional Hyperscale Firewall License.

Hardware Only vs. a Bundle

Buying the FG-3001F as standalone hardware suits organizations that already hold active FortiGuard subscriptions on a device being replaced, or those evaluating FortiOS prior to committing to a subscription term. Note that FortiGate hardware without a FortiCare subscription does not receive firmware updates or technical support — at minimum, a FortiCare Essential service is recommended for any production unit. FortiGuard security services (IPS, URL filtering, anti-malware) are separate and also require an active subscription.
