Product description

The FortiGate 120G ships with the inspection engine — but the engine is only as sharp as the signature feed behind it. The FortiGate 120G IPS Service (FC-10-F120G-108-02-12) is a 1-year FortiGuard subscription that keeps the FG-120G’s intrusion prevention system current with threat intelligence from FortiGuard Labs, covering exploit attempts, malicious botnet URLs, and lateral movement patterns that static or outdated signatures would miss entirely.

What the IPS Service Covers

FortiGuard IPS provides two core capabilities on the FG-120G:

  • Intrusion Prevention Signatures: AI/ML-based detection rules covering thousands of CVEs, protocol anomalies, and known exploit techniques, applied inline at up to 5.3 Gbps throughput on the FG-120G using its SP5 ASIC.
  • Malicious URL and Botnet Detection: Real-time reputation feeds identify connections to known command-and-control servers and botnet infrastructure, blocking callbacks and data exfiltration before they complete.

Who Uses This Service

Any FortiGate 120G handling internet-facing traffic should have an active IPS subscription. This is most critical for distributed enterprise branch sites where the FG-120G is the only perimeter device — there’s no upstream NGFW to catch what gets through. Organizations with unmanaged or legacy endpoints where patching is slow benefit most: even if a host can’t be patched against a specific CVE, the FortiGate can block exploitation at the network layer.

Activation and Delivery

FC-10-F120G-108-02-12 is delivered electronically. Purchase, receive the key, register it to your FG-120G serial number via FortiCare, and the IPS signature feed activates on the next scheduled update. No hardware ships. Worldwide delivery. This makes renewal practical even a few days before an existing contract lapses.

Standalone IPS vs. the Bundle Options

IPS is included in the ATP, UTP, and Enterprise bundles. If the FG-120G currently has no FortiGuard subscription, the ATP bundle gives better value than IPS alone — you get AMP and URL/DNS/Video Filtering at a small incremental cost over the standalone IPS price. The standalone IPS SKU is most useful for organizations that already have other FortiGuard services active and need to renew IPS separately on its own cycle.

What happens to IPS on the FortiGate 120G if the subscription expires?
When the IPS subscription lapses, the FortiGate stops receiving new signature updates. The engine continues running with the last downloaded signatures, but protection degrades as new CVEs are exploited using techniques not covered by stale rules. Renewing before the expiry date avoids any signature coverage gap.
Is the IPS service in this SKU what drives the FG-120G’s rated 5.3 Gbps IPS throughput?
Yes. The FortiGate 120G achieves 5.3 Gbps IPS throughput (enterprise traffic mix) using its SP5 ASIC and the FortiGuard IPS signature database together. The subscription keeps those signatures current so rated throughput applies against real-world threat patterns rather than a static test set.
Does FortiGuard IPS cover zero-day vulnerabilities?
FortiGuard Labs uses AI and ML models to develop signatures rapidly after new vulnerabilities are disclosed, and in some cases publishes virtual-patch signatures before vendor patches are available. For true zero-days not yet analyzed, behavioral detection and anomaly-based controls in FortiOS provide a secondary protection layer.
Can I apply different IPS profiles to different firewall policies?
Yes. FortiOS supports multiple IPS sensor profiles — default, all-threats, high-security, and custom. You can assign different sensors to different policies, for example applying a high-sensitivity sensor to traffic from untrusted VLANs while using a performance-optimized sensor for internal east-west traffic where false positives are a concern.
Does the FortiGate 120G IPS work in inline prevention mode or only detection mode by default?
FortiOS configures IPS sensors in inline prevention mode by default — matched signatures result in the session being dropped rather than just logged. You can override individual signatures to monitoring mode within a sensor if specific signatures generate false positives while you evaluate them.
