What the IPS Service Activates

• IPS Signature Updates — provides continuous updates to the FortiOS IPS engine’s detection rules. The IPS monitors traffic at the network level using signature-based detection and protocol analysis, identifying and blocking exploits, vulnerability scans, command-and-control traffic, and protocol anomalies. The engine itself is built into FortiOS; this subscription keeps the signatures current.
• Malicious and Botnet URL Detection — maintains a local database of known malicious URLs for drive-by exploit detection. This complements the IPS signature set by checking URLs encountered during IPS inspection against a constantly updated list of botnet C&C domains and malware delivery endpoints, enabling blocking before a connection is fully established.

Who Needs This Service

Any FortiGate 50E deployment where the IPS policy is active needs a current IPS subscription to receive updated signatures. Without it, the IPS engine continues to run against the last set of signatures it received, which degrades protection over time as new exploits emerge. Environments that are running the 50E at a branch office, small business perimeter, or remote site benefit from keeping this subscription active for the duration of the device’s deployment.

IPS Service vs. the FortiGuard Bundles

The IPS Service is the most broadly included FortiGuard add-on for the 50E — it appears in the ATP, UTP, and Enterprise bundles. If you are currently on a standalone IPS subscription, upgrading to the UTP bundle typically adds URL filtering, antivirus, and FortiCare Premium for a relatively modest increase in cost.
