How Inline Malware Prevention Works

Unlike post-download scanning, ILMPS inspects file transfers in real time as bytes flow through the FortiGate — blocking malicious files before they reach the endpoint. The engine uses FortiGuard’s AI and cloud-assisted intelligence for file-type analysis, behavioral profiling, and unknown threat detection. It supplements IPS and antivirus by targeting zero-day and polymorphic payloads that evade signature detection.

Applicable Traffic

ILMPS inspects HTTP/S, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, FTP, and SMB file transfers passing through the FortiGate 70F. SSL/TLS inspection (separate FortiGate policy) should be active for maximum coverage of encrypted file transfers.
