FortiGuard AMP covers traditional file-based malware (viruses, Trojans, ransomware payloads), mobile threats for Android and iOS, and unknown files submitted to FortiGate Cloud Sandbox for behavioral detonation analysis. It operates on file traffic across HTTP, SMTP, FTP, and other supported protocols.
When a file does not match any known AV signature, the FortiGate can submit it to FortiGate Cloud Sandbox for behavioral analysis. The file is executed in an isolated environment; if malicious behavior is detected, the FortiGate blocks the transfer. Results are also shared with FortiGuard to improve signature coverage globally.

FortiGate AMP can scan decrypted HTTPS content when SSL inspection is enabled in the security profile. Without SSL inspection, file scanning applies to unencrypted HTTP and other clear-text protocol transfers only.
Sandbox detonation typically takes 30 seconds to a few minutes depending on file type and size. FortiOS lets you configure the FortiGate to hold the file during scanning or to deliver it with a log alert if sandbox results are pending, balancing user experience against hold time.
