Product description

Port-based firewall rules allow or deny connections, but they do not look inside the payload. An attacker targeting a web server or RDP endpoint on a network defended only by rules can slip exploit code through an allowed port without triggering a single firewall block. The FC-10-W080F-108-02-12 brings the FortiWiFi 80F-2R’s intrusion prevention engine up to date with current FortiGuard Labs signatures for a full year, so traffic that clears the firewall still gets inspected for exploit patterns before it reaches its destination.

What IPS Service Activates

  • Signature-based detection and blocking of known CVE exploits, shellcode, and attack toolkits
  • Behavioral analysis to identify anomalous traffic patterns and zero-day exploit attempts
  • Virtual patching: IPS rules that block known exploits before a firmware patch is available
  • Malicious and botnet URL reputation blocking (included in the IPS service feed)
  • Automatic FortiGuard Labs signature updates as new attack methods are discovered and catalogued

Who Needs This

Any FortiWiFi 80F-2R facing internet-originated traffic benefits from a current IPS subscription. Without live updates, the IPS engine runs on a static signature set that grows less effective as new exploits emerge. This is especially relevant for organizations with web-accessible services, remote-access VPN, SIP endpoints, or SCADA systems accessible over IP. It is also a sensible first FortiGuard service for organizations adding threat prevention on top of basic packet filtering for the first time.

Activation and Delivery

FC-10-W080F-108-02-12 is a software subscription delivered electronically by DataCenter360.ca within 0–1 business days of order confirmation. Enter the license key under System > FortiGuard on the FortiGate GUI or through FortiCloud; IPS signature updates begin streaming from FortiGuard Labs automatically. No physical hardware ships and no customs processing is required regardless of where the FortiWiFi 80F-2R is installed.

IPS Alone vs. the Bundles

IPS is included in all three FortiGuard bundle tiers (ATP, UTP, Enterprise). This individual subscription makes sense when the 80F-2R already has URL filtering or AMP covered under a separate contract and IPS is the remaining gap. If multiple services are needed at the same time, the UTP bundle (FC-10-W080F-950-02-12) delivers IPS, URL/DNS filtering, AMP, and anti-spam at a bundled price:

Feature ATP UTP Enterprise
Intrusion Prevention (IPS)
Malicious / Botnet URL blocking
Advanced Malware Protection (AMP)
URL, DNS & Video Filtering
Anti-spam
Data Loss Prevention (DLP)

Buying from DataCenter360.ca

DataCenter360.ca is a Fortinet Select Partner based in Ontario, Canada. IPS subscriptions are one of the most common add-ons we process for the FortiWiFi 80F-2R; we routinely pair them with URL filtering or FortiCare in the same order to simplify procurement. Every license ships electronically, worldwide, within the business day. No minimum order applies.

How is IPS different from a standard firewall rule?
A firewall rule permits or denies traffic based on port, protocol, and address. IPS inspects the actual content of permitted connections and matches it against known attack signatures. Traffic allowed by the firewall on port 80 can still be blocked by IPS if the payload carries exploit code targeting a web server vulnerability. They complement each other rather than duplicate each other’s function.
Does IPS inspection affect throughput on the FortiWiFi 80F-2R?
Yes. Inline IPS inspection adds CPU and memory load. Fortinet publishes IPS and threat-protection throughput figures in the FortiWiFi 80F-2R datasheet. In typical branch deployments the performance headroom is sufficient, but you should validate the numbers against your peak traffic volume before enabling IPS on all policies simultaneously.
Does this subscription cover wireless traffic on the 80F-2R?
Yes. IPS inspection applies to all traffic processed by the FortiWiFi 80F-2R’s security policies, including wireless clients on the integrated 802.11ac radios. If IPS is enabled in the policy covering the wireless zone, those clients receive the same protection as wired endpoints.
How frequently are FortiGuard IPS signatures updated?
FortiGuard Labs releases IPS signature updates continuously as new vulnerabilities are published and exploits are developed. The FortiWiFi 80F-2R pulls these updates at a configurable interval (default: every 60 minutes or on-demand) as long as the IPS subscription is active and the appliance has FortiGuard connectivity.
Can IPS be combined with URL filtering on the same FortiWiFi 80F-2R?
Yes. FC-10-W080F-108-02-12 (IPS) and FC-10-W080F-112-02-12 (URL/DNS/Video Filtering) can both be active on the same device simultaneously. Together they cover network-threat detection and web-destination enforcement — the two layers the UTP bundle combines in a single SKU, purchasable individually here.
