Product description

Intrusion prevention is the foundation of network security, and for a FortiGate 50G-DSL to block active exploits rather than just log them, an active IPS subscription is required. The FC-10-F50GD-108-02-12 is a 1-year FortiGuard IPS subscription that keeps the device’s IPS engine and signatures current, enabling real-time detection and blocking of network-level attacks.

What the IPS Service Provides

Two components are active with this subscription:

  • IPS Signature Updates: the FortiGate 50G-DSL’s IPS engine uses a continuously updated database of signatures to detect and block exploits, protocol anomalies, and known attack patterns. Without an active subscription, the engine still functions but uses a static, outdated signature set.
  • Malicious and Botnet URL Detection: the IPS service includes a local URL database that identifies drive-by exploit attempts, malware download URLs, and botnet command-and-control endpoints, blocking them at the network inspection layer.

Who Needs This

Any site running a FortiGate 50G-DSL without an active FortiGuard bundle subscription. If the device has FortiCare support only, or if the existing bundle expired, this standalone IPS service restores active threat detection at the lowest entry cost. Branch offices, industrial sites, and retail locations where the FG-50G-DSL handles inbound traffic from untrusted networks are common use cases.

Activation and Delivery

License delivery is electronic. DataCenter360.ca sends the activation key within 0 to 1 business days. The key is entered in FortiOS under System > FortiGuard. No hardware changes are required on the FortiGate 50G-DSL.

Standalone IPS vs. a FortiGuard Bundle

IPS is included in all three FortiGuard bundles: ATP, UTP, and Enterprise. Ordering this service individually is practical when web filtering, anti-malware, and anti-spam are not currently needed, or when adding IPS to a site that already has other individual services. If the requirement soon expands to include URL filtering or malware inspection, the UTP bundle is a more cost-effective way to get both:

Security Service ATP UTP Enterprise
IPS and Malicious URL Detection (this service)
Advanced Malware Protection
URL, DNS and Video Filtering
Anti-Spam and Data Loss Prevention
Attack Surface Security (IoT, Security Rating)
OT Security

The FC-10-F50GD-112-02-12 (URL, DNS and Video Filtering) pairs well with this IPS service if web threat blocking is the next priority.

What does the IPS subscription add to the FortiGate 50G-DSL?
It provides continuously updated IPS signatures from FortiGuard Labs, enabling the FortiGate to detect and block current exploits, protocol anomalies, and network attack patterns in real time. It also includes a local database for blocking drive-by exploit URLs and botnet C2 endpoints at the IPS inspection layer.
Is the IPS subscription the same as what is included in the ATP or UTP bundles?
Yes, the IPS component is the same. The standalone service (108) provides IPS signature updates and the malicious URL database. The bundles include IPS along with additional services: ATP adds malware protection, UTP adds web filtering and anti-spam, and Enterprise adds OT security and attack surface features.
Can this service run alongside URL/DNS Filtering on the same device?
Yes. The FC-10-F50GD-108-02-12 can be combined with other individual FortiGuard services on the same FortiGate 50G-DSL, including the URL/DNS/Video Filtering subscription (FC-10-F50GD-112-02-12). Running both gives coverage comparable to the UTP bundle’s web security layer.
What happens when the IPS subscription expires?
The IPS engine continues to run but stops receiving signature updates. The device will operate with a static signature set from the date of expiry, leaving newer exploits and attack patterns undetected. Renewing before expiry ensures continuous protection without a gap.
Is a 1-year IPS subscription available in longer terms?
For the FortiGate 50G-DSL, only the 1-year standalone IPS service (FC-10-F50GD-108-02-12) is currently available. Multi-year IPS coverage is available through the ATP, UTP, or Enterprise bundles at 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year terms. Contact DataCenter360.ca to compare bundle options for your required term length.
