Fortinet 40GbE QSFP+ ER4 Module, Extended Range 40km (FN-TRAN-QSFP+ER)

The FN-TRAN-QSFP+ER is the extended-range member of Fortinet’s 40G QSFP+ line. Running 40GBASE-ER4 (IEEE 802.3bm) over four LAN-WDM wavelengths on duplex-LC single-mode fiber, it carries a 40 GbE link to 40km — four times the reach of the LR4 optics. That puts metro rings, campus-to-campus links and inter-site data-center connections in range of a standard QSFP+ cage, with digital monitoring to watch optical levels on the long span.

Where this module fits

An ER4 optic is for the 40G links that leave the building: connecting FortiGates or FortiSwitches across a campus, between offices over leased dark fiber, or around a metro ring, anywhere the span is beyond the 10km of an LR4 optic but within 40km. Inside the data center row the FN-TRAN-QSFP+SR covers to 150m on multimode; for 10km single-mode runs the FN-TRAN-QSFP+LR is the lower-cost choice, and the FN-TRAN-QSFP+LRI adds an industrial temperature rating.

Compatibility

Fits QSFP+ and QSFP28 slots on Fortinet appliances that accept 40G optics, and connects over duplex-LC single-mode fiber. Pair it with a matching 40GBASE-ER4 optic at the far end and confirm the link budget for your span; on very short runs, attenuation may be required to avoid receiver overload. For 10km use the FN-TRAN-QSFP+LR; for in-row links a passive FN-CABLE-QSFP+1 DAC replaces optics and fiber.
