Product description

A 2U enterprise firewall usually forces a choice between raw throughput and interface flexibility. The FortiGate 1001F (FG-1001F) avoids that trade-off: 19 Gbps of IPS throughput and 15 Gbps NGFW throughput from Fortinet’s NP7/CP9 SPU pair, paired with 2x 100GE QSFP28, 8x 25GE SFP28, and 16x 10GE SFP+ slots on the same chassis. This listing is the hardware only, with 960GB of onboard SSD storage for local logging, dual AC power supplies, and no FortiGuard subscription attached. Licensing is applied separately or bundled at checkout.

What’s in the box

The FG-1001F ships as a 2RU rack-mount appliance with dual hot-swappable AC power supplies, a console cable, and FortiOS pre-installed. Interfaces cover 2x 100GE QSFP28/40GE QSFP+ slots, 8x 25GE SFP28/10GE SFP+ slots, 16x 10GE SFP+/GE SFP slots, and 8x 10GE/5GE/2.5GE/GE/100M RJ45 slots, plus a dedicated GE RJ45 management port and a 2.5GE/GE HA port. Two SFP SX transceivers are included. The unit differs from the sibling FG-1000F in one respect: 960GB of onboard SSD storage for local log and report retention, useful where compliance requires logs kept on-device rather than shipped to FortiAnalyzer or the cloud.

Where it’s strong

The 1001F’s NP7 network processor handles session setup, VXLAN termination, and elephant flows in hardware, which is why the appliance sustains 650,000 new sessions per second and 7.5 million concurrent sessions without the CPU becoming a bottleneck. The CP9 content processor takes on SSL/TLS 1.3 decryption and IPS pattern matching, keeping SSL Inspection throughput at 10 Gbps even with logging enabled. Two 100GE QSFP28 slots mean data center core segmentation doesn’t need a separate switch fabric just to reach the firewall, and 100,000 firewall policies gives large environments room to segment by department, tenant, or application without hitting a ceiling.

Hardware alone vs. a bundle

Buy the FG-1001F on its own when a current FortiGuard subscription is being transferred from a retiring unit, or when hardware is being added under an existing enterprise agreement. For a new deployment, an FG-1001F-BDL is typically simpler: FortiCare Premium support and a FortiGuard tier (UTP or Enterprise) are already active at first boot, so there’s no gap between racking the appliance and turning on inspection. DataCenter360.ca stocks the bare appliance alongside every bundle tier and term, so starting with hardware and licensing separately later stays an option.

Who runs a FortiGate 1001F

  • Enterprise data centers consolidating firewall, segmentation, and SD-WAN edge functions on one chassis
  • Organizations needing 100GE core connectivity without a bridging device
  • Service providers and large campuses requiring local SSD log retention for compliance
  • High-availability deployments running Active-Active or clustered pairs at the network core

Moving up: FortiGate 1800F

When throughput or session capacity outgrows the 1001F, the FortiGate 1800F is the next step in the F-series lineup, adding higher-capacity SPU acceleration for larger core and data center deployments. Both models run the same FortiOS release and integrate with the same FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, and Security Fabric tooling, so a move up doesn’t mean relearning the management stack.

FortiGate 1001F (Hardware Only) – Frequently Asked Questions

Does the FG-1001F include FortiGuard security subscriptions?
No. This listing is the appliance only. FortiGuard services such as IPS, anti-malware, and application control require an active subscription to function. Add one at checkout or choose an FG-1001F-BDL bundle that ships with a service tier already applied.
What is the difference between the FG-1000F and the FG-1001F?
The two share identical port layouts and performance figures. The FG-1001F adds 960GB (2x 480GB) of onboard SSD storage for local log and report retention; the FG-1000F has no onboard storage. Everything else, including throughput, interfaces, and power consumption, is nearly identical.
Does DataCenter360.ca ship the FG-1001F outside Canada?
Hardware ships to Canadian addresses only, as DataCenter360.ca is not authorized to export Fortinet appliances. FortiGuard and FortiCare licensing for this model is delivered electronically and can be purchased for use worldwide.
Can I add FortiCare and FortiGuard licensing after buying the hardware only?
Yes. DataCenter360.ca carries every FC-10-F1K1F subscription SKU for the 1001F, including UTP, Enterprise, FortiCare Premium, FortiConverter, and RMA service tiers, in 1, 3, and 5-year terms.
What high-availability options does the FG-1001F support?
The FG-1001F supports Active-Active, Active-Passive, and clustering HA configurations, letting two or more units share load or fail over without dropping active sessions.
