Product description

Data centers pushing past 100 Gbps of inspected traffic outgrow desktop and 1U firewalls fast. The FortiGate 2201E (FG-2201E) is Fortinet’s 2U chassis-class appliance for that tier: 158 Gbps of IPv4/IPv6 firewall throughput, 21.8 Gbps of IPS inspection, and 2x 1TB SSD onboard for local logging, all driven by NP6 network processors and CP9 content processors rather than general-purpose CPU cycles. This listing is the bare appliance, hardware only, no FortiGuard or FortiCare subscription attached, sold to buyers across Canada.

What’s in the box

The FG-2201E ships as a complete 2RU rack-mount unit: dual hot-swappable AC power supplies (1+1 redundancy), 4x 40GE QSFP+ slots, 20x 25GE SFP28/10GE SFP+/GE SFP slots (18 data ports plus 2 dedicated HA ports), 14x GE RJ45 ports (12 data ports plus 2 management ports), and 2x 1TB SSD drives pre-installed for local log storage. Two 10GE SFP+ short-range transceivers are included in the box. Rack rails and a rear power supply cable are the usual field additions; see “Moving up” below for the matching accessory SKUs.

Where it’s strong

The NP6/CP9 combination puts most of the heavy lifting in silicon: firewall, IPsec, and traffic-shaping decisions run on the NP6 network processor, while SSL/TLS 1.3 decryption and pattern matching offload to CP9. That split is why the FG-2201E holds 17 Gbps of SSL inspection throughput without the usual cliff-drop seen on CPU-bound firewalls once encrypted traffic dominates the mix, and why it stays in front of high-density server racks and 25/40GE spine links without becoming the bottleneck. The onboard SSD pair also means local log retention doesn’t depend on a separate FortiAnalyzer for day-to-day troubleshooting, though most 2200E deployments still pair one in for retention and correlation at scale.

Hardware alone vs. a bundle

Buying the FG-2201E hardware-only makes sense when a FortiCare and FortiGuard term is already active elsewhere in the environment (an EA, a renewal in progress, or licensing procured through a separate track) and the appliance itself is the item on order. Everything else, IPS updates, application control, antivirus, DNS/URL filtering, and FortiCare support, comes from a subscription layered on afterward. The FG-2201E-BDL-950 (UTP) and FG-2201E-BDL-809 (Enterprise) SKUs package the same chassis with FortiCare Premium and a FortiGuard tier pre-attached at checkout, which is the simpler path for a first deployment. Both routes end on the same hardware; the difference is only whether licensing ships in the same order.

Who runs it

This is core or edge firewall hardware for mid-to-large enterprise data centers, colocation racks, and service-provider points of presence where 25/40GE uplinks and six-figure concurrent-session counts are the baseline, not the ceiling. Typical placements: data center segmentation between application tiers, internet edge for a campus or multi-site WAN aggregating at the core, and carrier or MSP infrastructure running CGNAT, IPv6 migration, or high-density VPN termination. Below this throughput tier, the FG-1100E or FG-1800F class covers most branch and mid-size deployments at lower cost.

Moving up

The FG-2201E’s direct sibling in the 2200E series is the FG-2200E, which drops the onboard SSDs but is otherwise identical on interfaces and throughput. For higher headroom in the same rack footprint, the FortiGate 2500E steps up firewall and IPS capacity while keeping the same 2RU chassis class. Rack mount sliding rails (SP-FG3040B-RAIL) and the matching AC power supply are the accessories Fortinet lists for this exact model; see the buy tables below.

Buying from DataCenter360.ca

DataCenter360.ca stocks the FG-2201E as new, sealed hardware and ships it 0 to 1 business day across Canada, backed by Official Fortinet Partner support if you need help matching it to the right FortiCare tier or FortiGuard bundle after the fact. If a UTP or Enterprise subscription hasn’t been sourced yet, the bundle SKUs below add it at checkout in one order instead of two.

Does the FG-2201E ship with a FortiGuard or FortiCare license?

No. This SKU is hardware only. FortiCare support and FortiGuard security services (IPS, antivirus, application control, DNS/URL filtering) are sold separately as subscriptions, or pre-attached by buying one of the FG-2201E-BDL bundle SKUs instead.

What’s the difference between the FG-2201E and the FG-2200E?

Both share the same NP6/CP9 hardware, port layout, and throughput numbers. The FG-2201E adds 2x 1TB SSD drives for onboard log storage; the FG-2200E ships without them. Everything else is identical.

Can DataCenter360.ca ship the FG-2201E outside Canada?

Hardware ships to Canadian addresses only, as DataCenter360.ca is not authorized to export Fortinet appliances. FortiGuard and FortiCare licensing for this model is electronic and can be delivered worldwide once you have the hardware in place.

What throughput can I actually expect from the FG-2201E?

Fortinet publishes 158 Gbps of IPv4/IPv6 firewall throughput and 21.8 Gbps of IPS throughput under its Enterprise traffic mix test. Real-world numbers depend on which security profiles are enabled, session mix, and packet size; the 21.8/13.5/11 Gbps figures reflect IPS-only, NGFW (firewall+IPS+app control), and full threat protection (adds malware protection) respectively.

Does the FG-2201E need a rack mount kit?

The chassis is rack-ready but Fortinet sells sliding rails separately as SP-FG3040B-RAIL, the same rail kit used across the FortiGate 1000 to 3000 series appliances. It’s listed as a cross-sell below and is not included in the box.
