Because the powered devices connect directly to the firewall’s LAN ports, FortiOS applies security policies to their traffic at the port level — no additional switch required for small deployments. The PoE WAN port can also power a PoE-capable WAN device such as a small outdoor AP or cellular router in some configurations.
