What this service covers

OT Security is built around the same signature engine that protects IT traffic, tuned for industrial protocols and equipment instead. Over the license term it delivers:

• OT device detection. An up-to-date signature package identifies PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, and other OT devices on the network and reports metadata back to FortiOS.
• OT vulnerability correlation and virtual patching. Known vulnerability exploits against OT devices are mitigated through virtual patches applied directly on the FortiGate, without touching the device firmware.
• OT application control and IPS. Additional signatures cover industrial applications and protocols (SCADA, Modbus, DNP3, and similar), backed by over 2,400 virtual patches, 1,600+ recognized OT applications, and 3,500+ protocol rules across the FortiGuard OT signature set.

The license activates on a FortiGate 1000F, Fortinet’s 2RU NGFW built around the NP7 network processor and CP9 content processor, rated up to 15 Gbps NGFW throughput and 13 Gbps threat protection throughput for enterprise traffic mixes.

Who needs it

This is a purpose-built add-on, not a general security upgrade. It fits manufacturing plants, utilities, oil and gas sites, transportation systems, and any environment where a FortiGate 1000F sits at the IT/OT boundary or inside a segmented industrial zone. If the deployment has no SCADA, PLC, or industrial protocol traffic to monitor, the standard UTP or Enterprise bundle covers the network more efficiently without this add-on.

Activation and delivery

OT Security is a software entitlement tied to the FortiGate 1000F’s serial number and registered FortiCare account.
