What the IPS service covers

FortiGuard IPS provides two layers of inspection on the FortiGate 100F:

• Signature-based detection: FortiGuard Labs publishes signatures for CVEs, known malware communication patterns, and application exploits. The FortiGate 100F applies these signatures to permitted traffic flows, blocking matching packets before they reach internal hosts. Signatures update continuously through the FortiGuard subscription feed.
• Protocol anomaly detection: inspects traffic for deviations from expected protocol behaviour, catching zero-day-style attacks that do not yet have published CVE signatures but break protocol norms used by legitimate applications.

The FortiGate 100F runs IPS inspection on the NP6/CP9 ASIC hardware, allowing throughput to remain close to rated speeds even under deep packet inspection.

Who needs the standalone IPS service

This license is appropriate when IPS is the specific gap in an existing FortiGate 100F subscription stack. A device that already carries URL filtering, AMP, or a FortiCare contract can add IPS independently here.
