Product description

Intrusion prevention is a foundational layer of network security for any FortiGate deployment. The IPS Service (FC-10-0030E-108-02-12) keeps the FortiGate 30E’s IPS engine fed with current FortiGuard signature updates, enabling detection and blocking of known exploits, protocol anomalies, and botnet command-and-control traffic at the network layer.

What IPS Does on the FortiGate 30E

The FortiGuard IPS service delivers three capabilities to the 30E:

  • Signature-based intrusion detection and prevention — a continuously updated library of attack signatures covers CVE-mapped exploits, protocol-specific attacks, and known threat actor TTPs. Matching traffic can be logged, alerted, blocked, or reset depending on the IPS profile configuration.
  • Protocol analysis — the IPS engine decodes application protocols to validate conformance and detect evasion techniques such as protocol tunneling and fragmentation attacks.
  • Malicious/Botnet URL detection and virtual patching — a local URL database for drive-by exploit detection integrates with IPS signatures. Virtual patching creates temporary IPS rules for devices with unpatched CVEs, providing coverage until firmware updates can be applied.

FortiGuard Labs publishes signature updates continuously; the FortiGate 30E pulls them automatically when the subscription is active.

Who Runs This Subscription

Any FortiGate 30E deployment that faces untrusted traffic from the internet or internal segments where exploitation risk exists should have IPS active. It is often the first FortiGuard service deployed on a firewall because it directly addresses network-layer threat coverage without requiring endpoint agents. Small offices, branch locations, and internet-facing servers all benefit.

Delivery and Activation

This is an electronic-only subscription. After ordering from DataCenter360.ca, the license key arrives by email within 0-1 business days. It registers to the device’s FortiCare account and activates automatically. IPS profiles are then applied to the firewall policies in FortiOS where inspection is required.

Standalone IPS Versus a Full Bundle

IPS is included in all three Fortinet bundle tiers: ATP, UTP, and Enterprise. If the 30E needs IPS plus additional services, the UTP bundle (FC-10-0030E-950-02-12) provides IPS, Advanced Malware Protection, URL/DNS/Video Filtering, anti-spam, and FortiCare Premium in one subscription at a lower combined price. This standalone SKU is the right choice when the other services are already active and only IPS coverage needs to be added or renewed separately.

Buying from DataCenter360.ca

DataCenter360.ca is an authorized Fortinet Select Partner. IPS subscription orders for the 30E are processed and delivered electronically the same business day. If you are renewing alongside other contracts, the team can help align expiry dates or recommend the most cost-effective path given your current license stack.

How often does FortiGuard push IPS signature updates?

FortiGuard Labs publishes IPS signature updates multiple times per day. The FortiGate 30E downloads updates automatically based on the scheduled update interval configured in FortiOS (typically hourly or every few hours). Critical zero-day signatures can be pushed in emergency packages outside the normal schedule.

Does IPS inspection slow down throughput on the 30E?

The FortiGate 30E has a rated IPS throughput specification; enabling inspection does consume processing capacity. For most small-office deployments operating well under the hardware ceiling, the impact is negligible. If throughput is a concern at the current network speeds, DataCenter360.ca can advise on current-generation hardware with higher IPS throughput ratings.

What is virtual patching and how does it work with IPS?

Virtual patching uses IPS rules to block known exploit traffic targeting specific CVEs on devices that haven’t received the vendor firmware fix yet. The FortiGate intercepts the attack before it reaches the vulnerable device. This is useful in OT and IoT environments where endpoint patching is slow or vendor-restricted.

Is this available for purchase from outside Canada?

Yes. Software subscription licenses carry no geographic restriction. DataCenter360.ca delivers electronically through Fortinet’s licensing portal to any country. The purchase process is fully online.

Is FortiCare support included in the IPS subscription?

No. The IPS service subscription covers FortiGuard signature updates only. Hardware replacement eligibility and technical support require a separate FortiCare contract. FC-10-0030E-247-02-12 is the FortiCare Premium 1-year option for the FortiGate 30E.
