What AMP Activates on the FortiGate 50E

The AMP subscription enables the following security functions:

• Antivirus (AV) Signatures — updates the AV engine’s signature database with patterns for known viruses, trojans, worms, and malware families. Inspection applies to files and content passing through the FortiGate on proxied traffic flows.
• Mobile Malware Detection — adds signature-based detection for mobile-platform threats (Android APKs, iOS exploits, mobile-targeting malware) to the AV engine. Useful where BYOD or mobile devices access company resources through the FortiGate.
• Virus Outbreak Protection — queries FortiGuard’s Global Threat Intelligence infrastructure for real-time malware hash checks. This provides a zero-day detection layer for threats that have not yet received a full AV signature, catching newly emerging malware before signatures are distributed.
• FortiGate Cloud Sandbox — submits suspicious files to Fortinet’s cloud-hosted sandbox for dynamic analysis. Files that behave maliciously in the sandbox are blocked, and results feed back into the FortiGuard threat intelligence network. This extends detection to previously unseen files that signature-based AV alone would miss.
• AI-based Heuristic AV — applies machine learning analysis to detect malware based on behavioral characteristics rather than known signatures, catching variants and mutations of known malware families.

Any FortiGate 50E actively scanning file traffic benefits from a current AMP subscription. Without it, the AV engine runs on its last received signature set, which grows stale quickly in environments with active file sharing, web downloads, or email traffic proxied through the firewall. Deployments at branch offices, small businesses, and remote sites where the FortiGate handles outbound web or mail inspection should keep this subscription active for the duration of the device’s use.
