Product description

Every unpatched CVE is an open door, and patch cycles rarely move as fast as exploit release cycles. The FC-10-0080E-108-02-12 keeps your FortiGate 80E-POE’s intrusion prevention engine updated with current FortiGuard IPS signatures for one year — giving you inline exploit blocking across thousands of known vulnerabilities without requiring every downstream system to be patched first.

What FortiGuard IPS covers

The FortiGuard IPS service keeps your FortiGate 80F’s intrusion prevention engine current with Fortinet’s signature database, which covers:

  • Exploit detection — signatures for thousands of known CVEs across operating systems, web applications, and industrial protocols.
  • Anomaly-based detection — behavioral rules that flag traffic patterns consistent with port scans, brute-force attempts, and lateral movement even when no exact signature matches.
  • Protocol decoders — deep inspection of HTTP, SMB, DNS, and other protocols to catch exploits embedded in legitimate traffic.

Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs updates signatures multiple times per day, so the FortiGate 80F reacts to newly disclosed vulnerabilities without waiting for a scheduled maintenance window.

Who uses this service

IPS is a standard layer for any network that cannot afford unplanned downtime from a worm or exploit campaign. It works well as a standalone license when web filtering or antivirus is already covered by another product, or when the primary concern is server-side exploits and lateral movement rather than end-user browsing. Security teams that need to demonstrate compliance with frameworks requiring intrusion detection (PCI-DSS, NIST, CIS Controls) also use IPS subscriptions to satisfy those controls on the firewall.

Activation and delivery

After purchase, a FortiCare license key arrives by email within 0–1 business days. Register it at the FortiCare support portal or directly in the FortiGate GUI under System > FortiGuard to enable signature updates. The subscription is valid for 365 days from activation date.

IPS alone vs. a bundle

If intrusion prevention is your only gap, the standalone IPS license is the most direct option. When you need IPS plus antivirus, web filtering, or antispam, the UTP bundle typically costs less than buying those services separately. The table below shows which services each bundle tier includes alongside IPS.

Advanced Malware Protection (AV)

Buying from DataCenter360.ca

What is the difference between IPS and a firewall policy?

A firewall policy decides whether traffic is allowed or denied based on source, destination, port, and application. IPS inspects the content of allowed traffic, looking for exploit patterns within sessions that the policy has permitted. The two controls are complementary — the firewall reduces exposure, IPS catches threats inside permitted sessions.

Does IPS affect network throughput on the 80E-POE?

Enabling deep inspection and IPS does reduce throughput compared to basic firewall forwarding. The FortiGate 80E-POE’s published NGFW and threat protection figures account for this. For performance-sensitive environments, check the datasheet’s threat protection throughput against your peak traffic requirements.

Can I run IPS without deep SSL/TLS inspection?

Yes, IPS works on unencrypted traffic and traffic you have configured for inspection. Encrypted traffic that bypasses SSL inspection is not inspected by IPS. Enabling SSL inspection on outbound traffic is recommended to maximize IPS effectiveness.

Is this subscription available to organizations outside Canada?

Yes. This is a software license with electronic delivery, available worldwide through DataCenter360.ca. There is no geographic restriction on the license itself.

How often are IPS signatures updated?

FortiGuard Labs releases IPS signature updates multiple times daily. With an active subscription, the FortiGate 80E-POE downloads updates automatically according to the schedule you configure under FortiGuard settings.
