Product description

Compliance with data handling regulations is increasingly a firewall-level problem. The FortiWiFi 61F processes traffic from all devices on the network, which makes it the natural enforcement point for preventing sensitive data from leaving through channels that standard firewall policies would permit. FC-10-W061F-589-02-12 adds FortiGuard Data Loss Prevention to the 61F, providing pattern-based and fingerprint-based content inspection without requiring a separate DLP appliance.

What DLP Covers on the FortiWiFi 61F

This subscription activates network-level DLP inspection with four core mechanisms:

  • Pattern Matching: pre-built sensors for credit card numbers, Social Insurance Numbers (SIN), health ID formats, and other regulated data types, plus support for custom regular expressions.
  • Data Fingerprinting: hash reference documents or datasets on the FortiWiFi 61F, then detect transmissions containing content that matches those fingerprints crossing any inspected interface.
  • Protocol Coverage: inspects HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, SMTPS, FTP, and IM sessions. HTTPS requires SSL deep inspection to be enabled in the security policy.
  • Actions: block, quarantine-file, or log-and-notify, with optional content archiving per sensor.

Who Needs This

DLP is primarily relevant to organizations handling regulated data under PCI DSS (payment card data), PIPEDA (Canadian privacy legislation), or HIPAA-equivalent requirements. It is also useful for any small office where the risk is employees uploading sensitive files to personal cloud storage, emailing confidential documents to outside accounts, or transferring data through protocols that a basic firewall policy does not inspect for content.

Activation and Delivery

Contract key delivered electronically within 0-1 business days. After registering on the Fortinet Support portal and activating against the FortiWiFi 61F serial number, DLP profile configuration is available under Security Profiles in FortiOS. No additional hardware is required; all DLP processing runs on the 61F itself.

One Service vs. the Bundle

FortiGuard DLP is available in the Enterprise bundle (FC-10-W061F-809-02-12), and not in UTP or ATP. Buying this standalone service is the practical choice when DLP is the specific requirement and the full Enterprise bundle is not needed. If the deployment also needs IPS, URL filtering, and FortiCare Premium, comparing the combined cost of individual services against the Enterprise bundle is worthwhile.

Is FortiGuard DLP on the 61F the same as an enterprise DLP platform?

No. This service provides network-level DLP inspection at the firewall, suitable for branch and small-office environments. Enterprise DLP platforms handle broader policy management, endpoint coverage, and discovery across file servers and cloud storage. The FortiWiFi 61F DLP service is a targeted control at the perimeter.

Does DLP inspect HTTPS traffic?

DLP can inspect HTTPS sessions only when SSL deep inspection is enabled in the security policy applied to that traffic. Without SSL inspection, the payload of encrypted sessions is not visible for DLP pattern matching.

Can DLP be configured to block specific file types, not just content patterns?

Yes. FortiOS DLP profiles support file-type sensors alongside pattern and fingerprint sensors. You can configure actions independently for each sensor type.

Is this service compliant with PIPEDA requirements in Canada?

FortiGuard DLP provides the technical enforcement capability to detect and block transmission of personally identifiable information. Whether it satisfies a specific PIPEDA compliance requirement depends on your organization’s overall data governance policy. A qualified compliance advisor should assess your full posture.

Can the FortiWiFi 61F DLP service archive blocked content for audit?

Yes. FortiOS DLP profiles can be configured to archive the content of matched sessions to FortiAnalyzer, FortiCloud, or a local syslog server, depending on the action and archiving settings configured in the profile.
