Product description

A firewall policy controls what traffic is allowed, but it cannot distinguish a legitimate HTTP connection from one carrying an exploit payload. The FC-10-F50GS-108-02-12 extends the FortiGate 50G-SFP with FortiGuard IPS for one year, enabling the appliance to inspect allowed traffic for attack signatures, protocol anomalies, and evasion techniques in real time.

What the IPS Service Covers

FortiGuard IPS runs as a deep-packet inspection engine inside the FortiGate 50G-SFP. With an active subscription, the signature database receives updates from Fortinet’s FortiGuard Labs team, who track new CVEs, exploit kits, and attack campaigns and push relevant signatures to subscribed devices. The service covers several threat categories:

  • Exploit signatures — detection patterns for known CVEs targeting operating systems, web applications, and network infrastructure.
  • Vulnerability scans — identification of reconnaissance activity and scanning probes before a full attack is launched.
  • Protocol anomalies — detection of malformed or non-compliant protocol behavior that legitimate traffic does not exhibit.
  • Botnet C&C communication — blocking outbound connections to known command-and-control infrastructure.

The FortiGate 50G-SFP delivers up to 2 Gbps of IPS throughput, which is well above the bandwidth demands of typical branch deployments.

Who Needs This Service

Any branch or mid-size site that relies on the FortiGate 50G-SFP for perimeter security should have an active IPS subscription. Unpatched endpoints behind the firewall are a common attack surface; IPS buys time between when a vulnerability becomes publicly known and when patch cycles catch up across the environment. It is also a practical control for PCI DSS, CIS, and SOC 2 frameworks that require network-based intrusion detection.

Organizations with a FortiAnalyzer or FortiAnalyzer Cloud subscription can correlate IPS events with other log sources to identify lateral movement or repeated probing from a single source.

Activation and Delivery

This is a virtual license delivered electronically. DataCenter360.ca sends the Fortinet registration key within 0 to 1 business days of your order. You activate it in the Fortinet Support Portal against your FortiGate 50G-SFP serial number, and the IPS engine begins using updated signatures immediately. No hardware is shipped.

Standalone IPS vs. a FortiGuard Bundle

Buying IPS as a single service is straightforward when the rest of your FortiGuard services are sourced under a different renewal schedule or when you need to bring a specific capability live quickly. For new deployments, the UTP or Enterprise bundle includes IPS alongside URL filtering, application control, AMP, and other services at a better per-service cost:

FortiGuard Service ATP Bundle UTP Bundle Enterprise Bundle
Advanced Malware Protection (AV + AMP)
IPS (Intrusion Prevention)
URL, DNS & Video Filtering
App Control & Anti-Spam
Data Loss Prevention
SD-WAN Cloud Assist & FortiManager Cloud

Buying from DataCenter360.ca

DataCenter360.ca stocks FortiGuard subscriptions for all active FortiGate platforms, including the 50G series. The FC-10-F50GS-108-02-12 is fulfilled electronically with no minimum order. If you are managing multiple FortiGate units at different renewal dates, reach out for a co-term quote — aligning expiry across sites simplifies the renewal cycle significantly.

Does IPS require SSL deep inspection to work?
Not for all traffic. IPS inspects unencrypted sessions without any additional configuration. For HTTPS traffic, SSL deep inspection must be enabled to give the IPS engine visibility inside encrypted sessions. Without it, IPS still protects clear-text protocols and can detect some anomalies in TLS handshakes.

Is this license available worldwide?
Yes. FortiGuard subscription licenses are software entitlements delivered electronically and can be shipped to customers in any country. DataCenter360.ca fulfills internationally.

What happens if the IPS subscription expires?
The IPS engine continues to run with the signature set that was active at expiry, but no new signatures are pushed. Over time, the gap between the static database and current threats grows, reducing detection effectiveness. Fortinet recommends renewing before expiry to avoid any lapse in coverage.

Can I apply a custom IPS signature alongside the FortiGuard database?
Yes. FortiOS supports custom IPS signatures that run alongside the FortiGuard database. This lets you add detection for proprietary applications or internal threats that would not appear in a shared signature database.

How does IPS compare to the UTP or Enterprise bundle for the FortiGate 50G-SFP?
This standalone IPS service covers intrusion prevention only. The UTP bundle adds URL filtering, application control, anti-spam, and AMP on top of IPS. Enterprise further adds DLP, industrial security, and management cloud services. If you plan to run more than two FortiGuard services, a bundle is typically more cost-effective per service than buying each subscription individually.
