When a remote site has no reliable wired uplink, the firewall has to bring its own. The FortiGate Rugged 60F-3G4G (FGR-60F-3G4G) is the cellular version of Fortinet’s hardened branch firewall: the same fanless, -40°C to 75°C chassis as the standard Rugged 60F, plus an integrated 4G LTE modem with dual SIM slots and a GPS receiver. That makes it a fit for pipelines, distributed grid assets, mobile or temporary sites, and any cabinet where running fibre or copper is not practical. This is the appliance on its own, no FortiGuard subscription attached; FortiOS firewalling, SD-WAN, and VPN run at power-on, and the AI-driven inspection services activate once you add a FortiGuard tier.
You receive the FGR-60F-3G4G hardware on FortiOS with integrated Secure SD-WAN and a built-in wireless controller. The embedded Sierra Wireless LTE module supports active/passive dual SIM for carrier failover, and the GPS feed lets you track and geo-reference deployed units. As with the wired model, two GE RJ45/SFP shared-media pairs handle copper or fibre, a bypass pair protects the inline path, and a hardware TPM anchors verified boot. The unit carries IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certification for utility and substation use.

Reach for the 3G4G model whenever cellular is the primary or backup WAN. SD-WAN can steer traffic across the wired and LTE paths and fail over automatically when a link degrades, which keeps a remote pump station, a roadside cabinet, or a temporary works site online without a truck roll. With the FortiGuard Industrial Security service active, it inspects the same 50-plus OT protocols as the rest of the Rugged family, so you get segmentation and virtual patching even on a link that rides over LTE.
Buy the bare unit when you already have FortiGuard licensing to apply, such as a refresh or a spare. For a fresh deployment, the FGR-60F-3G4G bundle bundles FortiCare Premium and a FortiGuard tier so the device lands ready to filter and block. Note that the cellular data plan and SIMs are supplied by your carrier; the appliance provides the modem, not the airtime.
For more interfaces, dedicated SFP slots, and a digital I/O module for alarm wiring, the FortiGate Rugged 70F-3G4G is the next model in the line. If you do not need cellular at all, the wired FGR-60F covers the same environmental envelope at a lower price.
