Standard firewalls are built for a clean office rack, not a substation cabinet, a factory floor, or a roadside enclosure. The FortiGateRugged 70F (FGR-70F) is built for the second category: a fanless, DIN-rail appliance certified to power-utility and industrial standards that keeps full FortiGate inspection running where heat, vibration, and dust would shorten the life of an ordinary box.

What you get with the FGR-70F

This is the ruggedized appliance on its own. FortiCare and FortiGuard subscriptions (FC-10-F70FB- service line) provide threat protection and are ordered separately, so the hardware and the security term are tracked independently.

Where the FGR-70F belongs

This model is for operational technology and critical infrastructure: electrical substations, water and wastewater plants, manufacturing lines, transportation and outdoor sites. The hardware bypass pair on PORT3 and PORT4 keeps the protected link passing traffic if the unit loses power, which matters when an OT process cannot tolerate a hard stop. Two SFP slots give fiber reach across a plant, the redundant wide-range DC inputs suit field power, and the IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certifications speak directly to utility deployments.

Hardware alone, or hardware plus a bundle

On its own the FGR-70F segments and routes OT traffic, but the FortiGuard engines, including OT-aware application and IPS signatures, require an active subscription. The FGR-70F bundle SKUs combine the unit with FortiCare Premium and a UTP or Enterprise term. Order the bare appliance when you already hold licensing or are provisioning a field spare ahead of a rollout.

Who runs it

Canadian utilities, municipalities, and industrial operators that need IT-grade security enforcement inside an OT environment, plus integrators building security into SCADA and process-control networks where standard appliances would not survive the conditions or pass the certifications.

Moving up

For higher inspection throughput in the same rugged form factor, the FGR-70G moves to the SP5 generation with substantially more performance while keeping the DIN-rail, wide-temperature, fanless design.

Buying from DataCenter360.ca

DataCenter360.ca supplies the FGR-70F as an authorized Fortinet Select Partner from Canadian stock, sealed and warranty-backed, with free shipping in 0 to 1 business day. OT projects often need the bypass behavior, certifications, or power inputs confirmed against a spec; send us the requirement and we will verify the fit before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

What makes the FGR-70F “rugged”?

It is a fanless, DIN-rail appliance rated for -40°C to 75°C operation, with redundant wide-range DC inputs and IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certifications. It is built to run in industrial and utility environments where a standard firewall would not.

What does the bypass port pair do?

PORT3 and PORT4 form a hardware bypass pair. If the unit loses power, that link continues to pass traffic, which protects OT processes that cannot tolerate an unplanned break in connectivity.

Does this unit include a FortiGuard license?

No. The FGR-70F is hardware only. FortiCare and FortiGuard services are ordered separately under the FC-10-F70FB- line, or together with the unit as a bundle.

Is it suitable for substation or SCADA networks?

Yes. The IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 certifications target power-utility use, and FortiGuard adds OT-aware signatures for industrial protocols when licensed.

Is the FGR-70F stocked and shipped in Canada?

Yes. We keep it in Canadian inventory and ship free to all provinces in 0 to 1 business day, brand new and factory-sealed.
