This is the bare FortiGate 7040E chassis: four module slots on an 80 Gbps fabric backplane, two of them FIM slots so a failed interface module never takes the box offline. Fortinet ships it with one system management module, three fan modules and three AC power supplies installed; the FIM and FPM modules that do the security work are ordered on top.

Standard configuration pairs two FIM interface modules with two FPM processing modules, which is the sweet spot for carriers and large enterprises that need N+1 on the interface layer without moving to the 8 RU 7060E. It is also the correct order code for a replacement enclosure or a lab/staging chassis that mirrors production.

Compatibility

Accepts FortiGate 7000E-series modules: FIMs in slots 1 and 2, FPMs in slots 3 and 4. Shares its cooling FRU (FG-7040E-FAN) with the FG-7030E; the AC supply FRU is FG-7040E-PS-AC and the DC-plant sibling chassis is the FG-7040E-DC. Need four FPM bays? That is the 6-slot FG-7060E.
