When a 400G port-to-port link is a bit too long for passive copper, the FN-CABLE-QSFPDD-AOC-03 bridges it. This active optical cable carries 400GbE between two QSFP-DD ports over 3 metres of OM3 fiber with the optics permanently attached at each end, so it stays as simple to deploy as a DAC while adding optical reach and a thinner, more flexible cable. It draws about 8W for the active optics, versus the near-zero draw of a passive DAC.

Active optical cable fills the gap between passive 400G DAC and pluggable optics. At 3m it links a 400G-capable FortiGate to an adjacent spine or aggregation switch across racks, where the passive FN-CABLE-QSFPDD-DAC cables top out and full transceiver-plus-fiber runs would be overkill. The OM3 core is lighter and bends more easily than thick 400G twinax, which helps in a dense cabinet.

Compatibility

Links two 400GbE QSFP-DD ports as a single fixed assembly, no separate optics or patch fiber to source. For port-to-port runs under about a metre, the passive FN-CABLE-QSFPDD-DAC-01 is lower cost and lower power; for structured cabling or reach past a few metres, use the FN-TRAN-QSFPDD-SR8 or LR4 modules over dedicated fiber.
