Fortinet 100GbE QSFP28 Module, Short Range 500m SMF (FN-TRAN-QSFP28-DR)

The FN-TRAN-QSFP28-DR covers the gap between multimode short-reach optics and full 2km or 10km single-mode modules. It runs 100 GbE up to 500m over a single pair of single-mode fibers at 1310nm on a duplex LC, which suits a spine-leaf hop or a same-building link that outgrows multimode SR but does not need a kilometre of reach. Because it is single-mode it uses the same duplex-LC plant as the longer FR and LR optics, so a 500m link can later extend without re-pulling fiber.

Where this module fits

A 100G DR optic is the short single-mode choice: a FortiGate uplink of a few hundred metres where the cabling is single-mode LC rather than MPO multimode. At 500m it reaches across a large data-center hall or between adjacent buildings on one campus. For a 2km link step up to the FN-TRAN-QSFP28-FR, for 10km the FN-TRAN-QSFP28-LR, and for a short in-rack port-to-port connection the FN-CABLE-QSFP28-1 passive DAC is lower cost.

Compatibility

Fits QSFP28 slots on 100G-capable Fortinet appliances and connects over duplex-LC single-mode fiber at 100GbE to 500m. Pair it with a matching DR or FR single-mode optic at the far end. For multimode short reach use the FN-TRAN-QSFP28-SR; for 2km use the FN-TRAN-QSFP28-FR; for a copper in-rack link the FN-CABLE-QSFP28-1 direct-attach cable replaces the optic and fiber.
