The FN-TRAN-SFP+BD27 is Fortinet’s 10-gigabit BiDi optic for sites where fibre strands are scarce. Instead of the usual two fibres, a BiDi module carries transmit and receive on one strand using two wavelengths: this BD27 half of the pair transmits at 1271nm and receives at 1331nm, reaching 30km over single-mode fibre on a single simplex LC connector. It plugs into any SFP+ cage on a FortiGate, FortiSwitch, or FortiManager and, being Fortinet-qualified, clears the appliance’s transceiver check instead of raising an unsupported-optic alarm.

BiDi optics halve the number of fibre strands a 10GbE link consumes, which is valuable on leased fibre or where conduit is full. The BD27 is the ‘A’ end of a pair: use it on one side of a 30km single-mode span and an FN-TRAN-SFP+BD33 on the other. It suits campus and metro links, remote-site backhaul, and any run where saving a fibre strand matters more than the small premium over a duplex LR optic.

Compatibility

Fits the SFP+ ports of FortiGate, FortiSwitch, and FortiManager appliances. Because it is single-strand BiDi, it will only link to its opposite-wavelength partner, the FN-TRAN-SFP+BD33 (TX 1331 / RX 1271); two BD27s will not talk to each other. Use OS2 single-mode fibre with a simplex LC connector. For a conventional two-fibre 10km link, the duplex FN-TRAN-SFP+LR is the simpler choice.
