Product description

Hotel rooms, hospital patient rooms, and open offices all share the same challenge: you need wireless coverage at every desk or bedside without running new cable drops to each corner. The FAP-23JF-A drops in over an existing RJ45 wall plate and turns that single connection into a full Wi-Fi 6 access point, with a spare PoE port left over to power a desk phone or IP camera at the same time.

What’s in the Box

The FAP-23JF-A ships with the AP unit and a standard mounting kit (ceiling, T-rail, and wall). Power over Ethernet is the normal delivery method: you need an 802.3at (PoE+) source to enable full functionality, including the PoE-out port. The GPI-130 PoE injector is the purpose-matched accessory if your switch does not provide PoE+ directly. An optional AC adapter (SP-FAP23J-PA-10) is available for non-PoE installations. For a hotel nightstand or desk deployment, the FAP-DESK-JK-10PK optional stand kit fits this model.

Where the FAP-23JF-A Fits Best

Wall plate APs are well-suited for three deployment types. In hospitality, each room gets a dedicated AP right at the data port: guests connect to a room-specific SSID, and the PoE-out port powers an IP phone or media device. In healthcare, the pass-through RJ45 lets a nurse station laptop stay wired while the AP handles wireless for mobile devices on that single cable run. In open-plan offices and remote work setups, the desk mount option turns any RJ45 drop into a personal Wi-Fi 6 node, eliminating weak-signal corner desk problems without a ceiling AP installation.

Hardware Alone vs. a Support Contract

The FAP-23JF-A ships as hardware only. FortiCare Premium (FC-10-P23JF-247-02-12) adds 24/7 TAC access, firmware updates, and hardware replacement coverage. For environments where the AP supports compliance-sensitive workflows, FortiCare Elite (FC-10-P23JF-284-02-12) raises that to priority replacement and faster TAC response windows. The AP runs without a service contract; TAC support and replacement coverage are the practical reasons most organizations add one at the time of purchase.

Who Runs the FAP-23JF-A

This AP sits in the managed SMB and mid-market range. Any FortiGate running FortiOS 6.x or later serves as the wireless controller with no additional license required. Alternatively, FortiEdge Cloud or Fortinet SASE handles zero-touch provisioning for multi-site or distributed deployments. Hospitality IT teams, property technology integrators, and healthcare network administrators are the most common buyers, typically deploying multiple units per floor on a structured wiring plant.

Moving Up from the FAP-23JF-A

When you need the same wall plate form factor with Wi-Fi 7 performance, the FAP-23JK-A is the direct successor: same wall-install footprint, tri-radio 802.11be, and 6 GHz support. For higher-throughput ceiling coverage rather than per-room deployment, the FAP-231K-A steps up to a ceiling-mount Wi-Fi 7 format with a broader cell radius. Both are available from DataCenter360.ca for Canadian deployments.

What power source does the FAP-23JF-A require for full functionality?

Full functionality requires an 802.3at (PoE+) source, either from a PoE+ switch port or the GPI-130 injector. At 802.3at power, all three radios operate, the PoE-out port delivers up to 7W to a downstream device, and USB is enabled. If powered by a standard 802.3af (15.4W) source instead, USB and PoE-out are disabled and only radio operation is supported. The SP-FAP23J-PA-10 AC adapter provides the same full-function capability without PoE.

Does the FAP-23JF-A require a separate wireless controller license?

No additional license is required if you manage it through a FortiGate. The wireless controller function is built into FortiOS at no extra charge, and the AP count supported depends on the FortiGate model. FortiEdge Cloud and Fortinet SASE are licensed separately and are optional alternatives to on-premises FortiGate management.

Can the third radio handle client traffic or only scan?

Radio 3 is a dedicated scanning radio operating in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for background WIPS/WIDS and spectrum analysis. It does not serve client connections. The two service radios (Radio 1 at 2.4 GHz and Radio 2 at 5 GHz) handle all client traffic, each supporting up to 512 simultaneous clients.

Is the FAP-23JF-A suitable for hotel room deployments?

Yes. Wall plate APs are purpose-designed for hospitality and healthcare per-room deployments. The FAP-23JF-A mounts directly over a standard RJ45 wall plate, uses the existing cable for both power and backhaul, and the 802.3af PoE-out port can power an IP phone or media device in the same room. The optional FAP-DESK-JK-10PK stand makes it equally usable on a nightstand or remote worker desk.

Does the FAP-23JF-A ship with a FortiCare support contract?

No. The FAP-23JF-A hardware is sold separately from FortiCare service contracts. FortiCare Premium (FC-10-P23JF-247-02-12) or Elite (FC-10-P23JF-284-02-12) can be added at the same time as the hardware or any time after. Fortinet’s Limited Lifetime Warranty covers hardware defects; FortiCare adds TAC access, firmware entitlement, and replacement coverage.
