Product description

Not every space needs a six-stream tri-band monster on the ceiling. For classrooms, retail floors, clinics, and standard office bays, the FortiAP 221K (FAP-221K-A) is the right-sized Wi-Fi 7 access point: a retail-grade dual-band unit with two 2×2 radios on 2.4 and 5 GHz, internal antennas, and a 2.5 Gigabit uplink so the wired side never caps the wireless. It brings 802.11be efficiency, BLE locationing, and Zigbee IoT support to rooms that just need fast, reliable coverage at a sensible price.

What’s in the box

The AP and its standard mounting kit for ceiling, T-rail, and wall. Power is not included: feed it from an 802.3at switch port or add the GPI-130 injector. Antennas are internal, so there is nothing to attach or aim.

Where it fits

The 221K is a 2.4/5 GHz design, so it deliberately skips the 6 GHz band to hold a lower price point. In return you get full Wi-Fi 7 mechanics on the bands most client devices still use: OFDMA, MU-MIMO, BSS coloring, and Target Wake Time for battery-friendly IoT. The 2.5 GbE port matters more than it looks, because a single 802.11be radio can saturate a gigabit cable, and the multigigabit uplink keeps that from happening. A dedicated background-scan capability watches all bands for rogues and interference without pulling clients off the air.

Powering it

The 221K is a low-draw AP at 16.3 W, so an 802.3at (PoE+) switch port runs it comfortably. Where there is no PoE switch nearby, the GPI-130 injector or an 18 W DC adapter does the job. No 802.3bt is required, which keeps switch and cabling costs down.

Management and licensing

No per-AP operating license is needed. The 221K is managed by a FortiGate firewall through its built-in WLAN controller, or through FortiEdge Cloud and SASE deployments. FortiCare Premium support for the AP (FC-10-P221K- prefix) is optional and sold separately.

Who runs it

Schools, retail, healthcare, and offices rolling out Wi-Fi 7 broadly where density per room is moderate and budget per AP matters. If a space needs 6 GHz capacity or external antennas, step up to the 231K or the 243K.

Moving up

The FortiAP 231K adds the 6 GHz band for tri-band Wi-Fi 7 in denser areas, the natural step up when one room outgrows dual-band.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the FAP-221K-A need a license to operate?

No. It is managed by a FortiGate or FortiEdge Cloud with no per-AP operating license. FortiCare Premium support (FC-10-P221K- prefix) is optional.

Does it support the 6 GHz band?

No. The 221K is a dual-band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi 7 AP. For 6 GHz, choose the tri-band 231K or 243K.

How is it powered?

802.3at (PoE+) from a switch, the GPI-130 injector, or an 18 W DC adapter. Maximum draw is 16.3 W. No power source is included in the box.

Why does it have a 2.5 GbE port?

A single Wi-Fi 7 radio can exceed gigabit speeds, so the 2.5 Gigabit uplink prevents the wired link from bottlenecking the wireless throughput.

Is this available in Canada?

Yes. DataCenter360.ca ships the FAP-221K-A free to all Canadian provinces in 0–1 business days. Hardware sales are for Canadian customers only.
