What’s in the Box

The FAP-231K-A ships with the AP unit, a standard mounting kit for ceiling, T-rail, and wall installation, and the necessary hardware. A 802.3at PoE injector (GPI-130) or 802.3bt injector (GPI-145) is ordered separately; an AC adapter (SP-FAP200-PA) is also an option. Region code A covers North America.

Where It’s Strong

The 6 GHz band is the key differentiator. It’s a clean spectrum with no legacy interference, wide channels (up to 320 MHz on 6 GHz), and support for OFDMA, BSS Coloring, and MU-MIMO working together. In high-density spaces — open offices with lots of Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 clients, conference rooms, university lecture halls — the 6 GHz radio picks up the bulk of modern traffic and leaves 5 GHz free for clients that need it. Simultaneous background scanning across all bands runs without sacrificing a radio from client service.

The multigigabit 5GE uplink keeps the backhaul from being a bottleneck. The 2.4 GHz radio continues serving IoT, BLE, and ZigBee devices from the same unit.

Hardware Alone vs. a Bundle

The FAP-231K-A ships as hardware only — no FortiCare service is included. Fortinet requires a FortiCare contract for TAC support, firmware updates, and feature access. At minimum, FortiCare Essential (FC-10-P231K-314-02-12) covers renewal support. FortiCare Premium (FC-10-P231K-247-02-12) adds 24/7 TAC and hardware replacement. If budget allows, pair the hardware purchase with at least a 1-year Premium contract to keep the unit supported from day one.
