Product description

Filling a stadium bowl or arena with reliable Wi-Fi is an antenna problem before it is a throughput problem. The FortiAP-HD-224KL (FAP-HD-224KL-A) is part of Fortinet’s ultra-high-density series, an outdoor Wi-Fi 7 access point with a fixed, ultra-narrow left-beam antenna engineered to light up a precise wedge of seating from an overhead catwalk or gantry. Two 802.11be radios run 4×4:4 streams on dual 5 GHz, and the directional array reaches up to 17 dBi so signal lands where the crowd is and stays out of neighbouring sectors.

What it is, and how it pairs

This is the fixed left-beam variant. In real venues the 224KL is deployed alongside its mirror, the FAP-HD-224KR-A (right-beam), so a single mount point can cover two adjacent seating sections, one beam angled each way. Antennas are internal to the sealed overhead enclosure; nothing is exposed to weather or tampering.

Where it earns its place

Ultra-high-density venues defeat ordinary APs because thousands of devices crowd into a small area with line-of-sight to many radios at once. The HD series answers that with patented beam-shaping: the 224KL’s narrow 15° × 17° pattern focuses capacity on its assigned section and minimizes co-channel interference with adjacent units, which is how the series supports up to 2,048 associated and 200+ active devices per AP. Dual 5 GHz radios maximize spatial reuse across the bowl, and the 10 Gbps RJ45 backhaul keeps a packed section fed at full rate.

Powering it

The 224KL runs on 802.3bt PoE delivered over its RJ45 uplink, so a bt-capable switch or the GPI-145 injector powers it without a separate DC run to the catwalk. Plan the PoE budget and cable lengths as part of the gantry design.

Management and licensing

No per-AP operating license. The unit is managed by the Fortinet WLAN controller on a FortiGate or through FortiEdge Cloud, with full support for the radio resource management, client load balancing, and assisted roaming the HD series needs. FortiCare Premium support (FC-10-HD2KL- prefix) is optional and strongly recommended for hardware mounted high in a venue.

Who runs it

Stadiums, arenas, convention centres, transit hubs, and large auditoriums planning a Wi-Fi 7 high-density refresh. These are designed by RF survey, not dropped in ad hoc, and the left/opposite-beam pairing is part of that design.

Moving up

For sections that need four radios and reconfigurable beam modes rather than a fixed narrow beam, the FortiAP-HD-444KN steps up to the quad-radio, 16-stream tier of the same series.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the 224KL and 224KR?

They are mirror-image fixed-beam units: the 224KL aims its ultra-narrow beam left, the 224KR aims right. They are typically deployed together to cover two adjacent venue sections from one mount.

Does it need a license to operate?

No per-AP operating license. It is managed by the Fortinet WLAN controller on a FortiGate or FortiEdge Cloud. FortiCare Premium support (FC-10-HD2KL- prefix) is optional.

How many devices can it handle?

The HD series supports up to 2,048 associated and 200+ active devices per AP, achieved through narrow beam-shaping and dual 5 GHz radios for spatial reuse.

How is it powered and backhauled?

802.3bt PoE over its RJ45 uplink, with a 10 Gbps RJ45 for backhaul and a second 5 Gbps RJ45. A bt switch port or the GPI-145 injector supplies power.

Is this available in Canada?

Yes. DataCenter360.ca ships the FAP-HD-224KL-A free to all Canadian provinces in 0–1 business days. Hardware sales are for Canadian customers only.
