What this service covers

FortiGuard DLP inspects outbound and internal traffic for patterns that match sensitive information: credit card numbers, social insurance numbers, healthcare record identifiers, custom file fingerprints, and keywords or phrases you define. When a match is detected, the FortiGate 30G can block the transfer, log it, or trigger an alert depending on the policy configured. FortiGuard Labs updates the detection dictionaries throughout the subscription term, adapting to new data types and evolving compliance requirements.

With SSL deep inspection enabled on the FortiGate, DLP extends to HTTPS and other encrypted sessions. SSL inspection is a FortiGate configuration, not a separate license.

Who needs it

DLP belongs in environments where data loss carries real legal or contractual weight: PCI-DSS for card processing, PIPEDA for Canadian personal data handling, HIPAA for health information, or SOX for financial records. Professional services firms and legal practices handling client information often have similar obligations under engagement letters or sector-specific rules. Activation and delivery

The subscription is issued electronically and registered to a specific FortiGate 30G by serial number. Nothing ships physically. Once activated, the appliance pulls DLP definition updates from FortiGuard Labs for the full 12-month term. A live FortiGate 30G is required before activation.

One service or a broader bundle?

FortiGuard DLP is an add-on and is not included in the ATP, UTP, or Enterprise subscription bundles. If the 30G does not yet carry a security bundle, buying DLP alone leaves out IPS, antivirus, application control, web filtering, and antispam. Most customers adding DLP are doing so on top of an existing bundle subscription, not instead of one. If building the 30G stack from scratch, a UTP or Enterprise bundle should typically come first.
