Twenty-four GE access ports, all PoE+-capable, backed by Layer 3 routing and an out-of-band management interface — the FS-224D-FPOE is Fortinet’s choice for access-layer deployments where every drop needs power and the switch needs to carry routing duties. GE SFP uplinks connect to a distribution or core layer; FortiLink brings the unit under FortiGate control with no extra configuration overhead.
The FS-224D-FPOE ships as a 1RU rack-mountable switch with rack-mount hardware, power cable, and console cable. All 24 RJ45 ports support PoE and PoE+ (802.3af/at). A dedicated 10/100 out-of-band management port isolates management traffic from the data plane. No additional license is required for FortiLink operation. This is the D-series predecessor to the FS-224E family, still current and fully supported.

The 224D-FPOE is sized for deployments where a single 24-port switch serves a complete floor or zone and every endpoint needs power — think a conference-room cluster of IP phones and APs, a building floor with 20 desks plus cameras and APs, or an access closet feeding IoT devices and wireless controllers exclusively. The dedicated OOB management port is particularly useful here: it lets network administrators access the switch console even when the data-plane ports are looped, congested, or being reconfigured.
The L2/3 routing capability means the 224D-FPOE can handle inter-VLAN routing locally and participate in OSPF — useful in distributed campus deployments where pushing all traffic to a central core for routing adds latency or over-subscribes upstream links.
The FS-224D-FPOE hardware works without any FortiCare contract. FortiLink management through FortiGate is built-in at no cost. FortiCare Premium for the switch (FC-10-W0226-247) covers TAC support, replacement RMA, and firmware access. For an access switch powering 24 PoE devices in production, an RMA contract is worth considering: a failed unit brings down every powered endpoint on that switch simultaneously.
Network engineers deploying FortiGate SD-Branch architectures at small to medium branches reach for the 224D-FPOE when the access layer needs L3 routing locally and full PoE density on a single switch. It is a common fit in multi-tenant office buildings, education classrooms, and healthcare ward deployments — wherever 24 PoE-fed devices share a single access closet and the switch is expected to do more than just forward Ethernet frames.
The FS-224E-POE is the current-generation successor to the D-series, with a fanless design and more compact chassis. For full PoE on all 24 ports in the E-series, the FS-224E-FPOE is the upgrade path. If 48-port density is needed, the FS-248E-POE or FS-248E-FPOE extend the same architecture to double the port count.

Yes. All 24 GE RJ45 ports support both 802.3af (15.4W) and 802.3at PoE+ (30W). The total switch budget is 370W. At 802.3af loads (~15W average), all 24 ports can run simultaneously. At full 802.3at, the switch can supply around 12 ports at 30W before hitting the budget ceiling.
The dedicated 10/100 OOB management port provides a separate path to the switch’s management plane that is independent of the data ports. If a data-plane loop or high-traffic event disrupts normal forwarding, you can still reach the switch CLI and web interface over the management port — useful for troubleshooting without adding to the problem traffic.
The FS-224D-FPOE supports static routing, RIP v1/v2, and OSPF. This allows the switch to participate directly in your IP routing topology without relying entirely on a central router or FortiGate for inter-VLAN routing. BGP is not supported; that would require an upstream FortiGate or core router.
The four uplink ports use standard 1GbE SFP form factor. Fortinet’s FN-TRAN-GC (copper GE SFP / 1000BASE-T) is ideal for connecting to existing RJ45-based distribution switches over short runs. For fiber uplinks, use Fortinet-qualified SFP transceivers at the appropriate wavelength and reach. Third-party SFP modules may function but are outside the Fortinet-tested compatibility list.
Yes. DataCenter360.ca ships from Canadian inventory. Orders placed before 2 PM ET typically ship same day with 0–1 business day delivery and no shipping charge. The unit arrives brand new in original Fortinet packaging with the manufacturer’s limited lifetime hardware warranty.
