Product description

Some outdoor sites are less about peak Wi-Fi speed and more about connecting things in places without easy backhaul. The FortiAP 222KL (FAP-222KL-A) is built for exactly that: a ruggedized outdoor Wi-Fi 7 access point that folds LoRaWAN and an LTE Cat-4 modem into the same enclosure. Two 2×2 Wi-Fi radios on 2.4 and 5 GHz cover users and devices, while the LoRaWAN gateway reaches low-power IoT sensors across long distances and the LTE radio provides cellular backhaul where running fibre is impractical.

What’s in the box

The AP, wall and pole mounting brackets, a grounding cable, and 802.3bt PoE. The five antennas are external N-type connections (Wi-Fi, LoRaWAN, LTE, and GNSS), so coverage and IoT reach can be tuned per site.

Where it earns its place

The 222KL is an IoT-first outdoor AP. The integrated LoRaWAN gateway collects data from long-range, low-power sensors, smart-city meters, agricultural probes, asset trackers, that would otherwise need a separate gateway. The LTE Cat-4 modem gives the unit a cellular uplink for remote yards, parking structures, and temporary sites where wired backhaul is not available. On the Wi-Fi side, two Wi-Fi 7 radios still deliver up to 4.324 Gbps on 5 GHz for the people and devices on site. GNSS keeps the AP location-aware for fleet and asset use cases.

Powering it

The 222KL uses 802.3bt PoE, which ships with the unit, and the second RJ45 can act as PSE or PD for chaining a downstream device. Plan a bt-capable switch port or the GPI-145 injector for the full feature set including the LTE and LoRaWAN radios.

Management and licensing

The Wi-Fi side is managed by a FortiGate or FortiEdge Cloud with no per-AP operating license. FortiCare Premium support for the AP (FC-10-F22KL- prefix) is optional and sold separately. LTE service requires a carrier SIM, and LTE module availability is subject to country and region.

Who runs it

Smart-city, utility, campus-exterior, agricultural, and transport deployments that need to connect sensors and provide Wi-Fi where backhaul is the hard part. If the priority is maximum outdoor Wi-Fi throughput rather than IoT and cellular backhaul, the FortiAP 244K is the better fit.

Moving up

The FortiAP 244K steps up to four radios with 6 GHz support and a 10 Gbps SFP+ uplink for outdoor sites that need raw wireless capacity over IoT integration.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the 222KL different from a standard outdoor AP?

It integrates a LoRaWAN IoT gateway and an LTE Cat-4 cellular backhaul radio alongside its Wi-Fi 7 radios, so it can connect long-range sensors and operate without wired backhaul.

Does it need a license to run Wi-Fi?

No per-AP operating license. It is managed by a FortiGate or FortiEdge Cloud. FortiCare Premium support (FC-10-F22KL- prefix) is optional. LTE needs a carrier SIM.

Is the LTE module available everywhere?

No. LTE use is subject to country and region of deployment and may not be supported at early release. Confirm availability for your location before ordering.

How is it powered?

802.3bt PoE, which is included. A bt-capable switch port or the GPI-145 injector powers the full radio set. The second RJ45 can act as PSE or PD.

Is this available in Canada?

Yes. DataCenter360.ca ships the FAP-222KL-A free to all Canadian provinces in 0–1 business days. Hardware sales are for Canadian customers only.
