The FortiGate 71F is actively sold and fully supported, with FortiGuard and FortiCare subscriptions available for 1, 3, and 5-year terms. For new deployments needing the latest SP5 ASIC platform, the FortiGate 70G/71G is the next-generation successor.

Performance is identical — both run on the same SOC4 ASIC. The FortiGate 71F adds a 128 GB onboard SSD for local logging and reporting. This lets you store logs, generate reports, and run basic FortiAnalyzer-style analytics directly on the appliance without deploying a separate logging server. Choose the 70F when on-box storage is not required.

The 128 GB SSD provides practical on-box storage for traffic and event logs at typical branch volumes. For compliance-grade long-term retention or centralized multi-site logging, a dedicated FortiAnalyzer or FortiAnalyzer Cloud subscription (FC-10-0071F-585) is recommended.

Most mid-size branches choose UTP (Unified Threat Protection) for IPS, anti-malware, web and DNS filtering, and antispam. ATP covers core threat prevention only. Enterprise adds DLP, AI inline malware prevention, and the full FortiGuard service set. All include FortiCare Premium support.

Both include a 128 GB SSD for on-box logging. The 71F sits one tier above the 61F — higher concurrent session capacity (1.5 M vs the 61F’s lower limit) and slightly higher threat protection throughput — making it the better fit for busier mid-size branches.
