Product description

Branch offices that have upgraded to Wi-Fi 6 or 2.5G-capable devices often find that their existing 1G access switches are the bottleneck, not the WAN. The FortiSwitch 124G addresses that gap: 24 ports running at 2.5G each, six 10G SFP+ uplinks, 240 Gbps switching capacity, and completely passive fanless operation in a standard 1U rack-mount chassis. No PoE injectors or power-budget gymnastics required since this model focuses purely on switching performance for powered-separately devices.

2.5G Access Density for Modern Branch Networks

Most enterprise-grade Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E access points top out at 2.5G Ethernet throughput, and many modern workstation NICs support 2.5G as well. The FS-124G’s 24 auto-negotiating RJ45 ports run at 2.5G on Cat5e and above, so there is no cable re-run required in most existing wiring plants. Six 10G SFP+ uplinks give enough bandwidth for a consolidated uplink to a distribution switch or firewall without creating an obvious aggregation bottleneck.

FortiLink for Security Fabric Management

Connected to a FortiGate via FortiLink, the FS-124G becomes part of the Fortinet Security Fabric. The FortiGate auto-discovers the switch, pushes port profiles, VLAN configurations, and 802.1X NAC policies, and monitors per-port statistics from a central dashboard. FortiGuard IoT device identification classifies devices as they connect; anomalous devices can be quarantined to an isolated VLAN automatically. Security Fabric automation stitches let you trigger port actions based on FortiGate security events.

Standalone Operation and Cloud Management

The FS-124G runs in standalone mode via CLI or HTTPS GUI without any FortiGate dependency. FortiCloud zero-touch provisioning is available for remote deployments where a technician is not on site: the switch phones home to FortiCloud, downloads its configuration, and becomes operational without manual intervention. Both standalone and FortiLink modes support SNMP v1/v2c/v3, sFlow, and NetFlow/IPFIX for integration with existing NOC monitoring tools.

MCLAG for High-Availability Deployments

Two FS-124G units can form an MCLAG (multi-chassis LAG) pair, presenting a single logical switch to upstream devices and dual-homed servers. Active-active forwarding across both units maximizes bandwidth utilization; failure of one switch is transparent to end devices. FortiGate HA clusters can connect to the MCLAG pair via split LAG for a fully redundant distribution-to-access topology without spanning tree blocking.

FS-124G vs FS-124G-FPOE: Choosing the Right Model

The FS-124G is the non-PoE variant. If any of the 24 ports need to power devices, the FS-124G-FPOE adds 802.3bt PoE++ on 8 ports and 802.3af/at on 16 ports with a 780W total budget. Port counts, uplinks, and switching capacity are identical between the two models. Choose the FS-124G when all connected devices are separately powered, keeping switch cost and power draw to a minimum.

Buying the FortiSwitch 124G from DataCenter360.ca

DataCenter360.ca stocks the FS-124G for Canadian buyers with free shipping and same-day or next-business-day dispatch. Factory-new units with Fortinet limited lifetime hardware warranty. FortiCare Premium (FC-10-S24GN-247-02-12) adds NBD advance hardware replacement. Multi-year contracts and volume pricing for multi-site deployments are available on request.

Does the FS-124G support PoE?

No. The FS-124G is a non-PoE model. If you need to power access points, cameras, or phones, the FS-124G-FPOE is the direct equivalent with 802.3bt PoE++ (8 ports) and 802.3af/at (16 ports) plus a 780W PoE budget, in the same 1U rack-mount chassis.

Can the FS-124G run 2.5G on standard Cat5e cable?

Yes. 2.5G BASE-T (802.3bz) runs on existing Cat5e cabling up to 100 metres, which covers the vast majority of structured wiring plant runs. No cable replacement is required when upgrading from a 1G switch to the FS-124G in an office or campus environment.

Is the FS-124G available in Canada with a warranty?

Yes. DataCenter360.ca is a Canadian Fortinet Select Partner. All FS-124G units ship factory new with Fortinet’s limited lifetime hardware warranty. FortiCare Premium and Elite support contracts are available at purchase for NBD advance hardware replacement and priority ticket handling across Canada.

Does the FS-124G require a FortiGate to function?

No. It operates in standalone mode with full CLI and HTTPS GUI management. FortiLink to a FortiGate is optional and adds Security Fabric integration, centralized NAC, FortiGuard IoT classification, and unified policy management. You can start in standalone mode and switch to FortiLink managed mode later without replacing the switch.

What SFP+ modules are compatible with the FS-124G uplinks?

The six SFP+/SFP ports accept standard 10G SFP+ and 1G SFP transceivers. Fortinet’s FN-TRAN-SFP+SR (short-range 10G multimode) is the most common choice for cross-panel connections within a rack or MDF. FN-TRAN-SFP+LR covers single-mode runs to remote IDFs. FN-CABLE-SFP+1 (1-metre DAC) and similar passive copper DACs work for short rack-to-rack links without optics.
