Fortinet FortiGate 71G

The FortiGate 71G is a current-generation model, actively sold and fully supported with FortiGuard and FortiCare subscriptions available for 1, 3, and 5-year terms.

Performance is identical — both run on the same SP5 ASIC. The FortiGate 71G adds a 64 GB onboard SSD for local logging and reporting. This lets you store logs, generate reports, and run basic FortiAnalyzer-style analytics directly on the appliance without deploying a separate logging server. Choose the 70G when on-box storage is not required.

The 64 GB SSD provides practical on-box storage for traffic and event logs at typical branch volumes. For compliance-grade long-term retention or centralized multi-site logging, a dedicated FortiAnalyzer or FortiAnalyzer Cloud subscription (FC-10-GT71G-585) is recommended.

Most mid-size branches choose UTP (Unified Threat Protection) for IPS, anti-malware, web and DNS filtering, and antispam. ATP covers core threat prevention only. Enterprise adds DLP, AI inline malware prevention, and the full FortiGuard SASE service set. All include FortiCare Premium support.

They address different needs. The 71G keeps all 10 GE RJ45 ports as standard data ports and adds a 64 GB SSD for on-box logging. The 70G-PoE replaces four of the internal ports with PoE/PoE+ ports (60 W budget) for powering FortiAPs, phones, or cameras — but has no onboard storage. The 71G-PoE combines both: PoE and 64 GB SSD.
