The FortiGate 50G is a compact, fanless desktop next-generation firewall built on Fortinet’s FortiSP5 secure SD-WAN ASIC. It delivers 1.1 Gbps of threat protection, 5 Gbps firewall throughput, and 720,000 concurrent sessions across five GE RJ45 ports, making it a significant step up from the 30G series for small-to-mid branch sites.
Secure SD-WAN and Universal ZTNA are built into FortiOS at no extra cost. The FortiSP5 ASIC delivers hardware-accelerated firewall, IPsec VPN, and SSL inspection — enabling full NGFW protection without the performance penalty of software-only solutions. Managed FortiAPs (16 total) and FortiSwitches (8) can be consolidated into a single console via FortiLink.

Yes. The FortiGate 50G is a current-generation G-series model built on Fortinet’s FortiSP5 ASIC. It is not end-of-life and is fully supported with active FortiGuard and FortiCare subscriptions.
Both share the same FortiSP5 platform and identical performance. The FG-50G has five GE RJ45 ports (WAN, 3x internal, FortiLink). The FG-50G-SFP adds a GE SFP WAN port alongside the RJ45 WAN port, useful when connecting to an SFP-based ISP handoff or fibre modem.
The 50G more than doubles the threat protection throughput (1.1 Gbps vs 500 Mbps), nearly triples new sessions per second (85,000 vs 30,000), and increases concurrent sessions to 720,000 from 600,000. Both run the same FortiOS and FortiGuard services. The 30G is for very small sites; the 50G handles busier branch traffic.
UTP (Unified Threat Protection) is the most popular choice for branch sites — it adds web, DNS, and video filtering on top of IPS and anti-malware. ATP covers the core threat stack without web/content filtering. Enterprise adds DLP, AI inline malware prevention, and the full SASE service set.
