Yes. The FortiGate 51G is a current-generation G-series model built on Fortinet’s FortiSP5 ASIC. It is not end-of-life and is fully supported with active FortiGuard and FortiCare subscriptions.

The two models share the same FortiSP5 ASIC and deliver identical throughput (1.1 Gbps threat protection, 5 Gbps firewall, 720,000 concurrent sessions). The sole difference is that the FG-51G includes a 64 GB onboard SSD for local log storage and reporting. Choose the 51G when you want on-box logs without deploying a FortiAnalyzer.

The 64 GB SSD is sufficient for local logging at typical small-branch traffic volumes. FortiAnalyzer provides centralised log management, long-term retention, advanced correlation, and compliance reporting across multiple devices. For a single small site the onboard SSD is often enough; for multi-site deployments FortiAnalyzer Cloud or an on-prem appliance is recommended.

Most small-to-mid branch sites choose UTP (Unified Threat Protection) for web, DNS, and video filtering on top of IPS and anti-malware. ATP covers the core threat stack only. Enterprise adds DLP, AI inline malware prevention, and the full SASE service set including FortiSASE and ILMPS.
