The FortiGate 51G-5G is the storage-equipped variant of the FortiGate 50G-5G, adding a 64 GB onboard SSD to the same FortiSP5-accelerated platform. The embedded 3G/4G/LTE/5G modem (with five SMA WWAN antennas) makes it purpose-built for sites where cellular is the primary or backup WAN link — retail locations, construction sites, kiosks, or any deployment where wired broadband is unavailable or unreliable.
The 64 GB SSD enables local log storage and FortiAnalyzer-compatible log retention directly on the device, which is valuable in bandwidth-constrained cellular deployments where forwarding logs to the cloud would consume WAN data. All NGFW capabilities — 1.1 Gbps threat protection, IPS, SSL inspection, Universal ZTNA, and Secure SD-WAN — run on the same FortiSP5 hardware as the 50G-5G.

Both models are identical in hardware platform, performance, and 5G connectivity. The FG-51G-5G adds a 64 GB onboard SSD for local log storage. This is particularly valuable in cellular deployments where forwarding logs upstream over a metered connection would consume data allowances. If local log storage is not a requirement, the FG-50G-5G is the lower-cost choice.
